Chances at 6/7/8 year med. programs! +Need help w/ resume!

Here's my resume. I just typed it out yesterday, so it's very rough draft and missing a lot of stuff. There are questions throughout it...but my main concerns are at the bottom. Thank you, and any help is much appreciated.

Personal: Indian male from Las Vegas, Nevada (pretty much the worst school district in the nation). I attend the Academy of Math and Science, and Applied Technology (known as AMSAT) at an urban high school. I have attended math and science magnet programs at urban public schools in both elementary and middle school. I have a real passion for science and excel in math. I am a vegetarian if it matters haha.

GPA: 4.0 unweighted
4.7 (Our school maxes out at 4.7)

Class Rank: 1/449

SAT: December 2005 – 2090 (M: 690, R: 650, W: 750)
April 2006 - 2060 (M: 710, R: 640, W: 710)
Composite - 2110
Comment: Definitely keep getting screwed by math. I know I can score 780+. I will try to beef up my score to 2250 this October. I know I can get 2200 at least; and will hope dearly for a 2300.

SAT II: Chemistry- 770
Math II – 760 (Ran short on time!!!! If I retake in November and get 800, will colleges still see my 760?)
U.S. History – 720

Should I grab a couple books and take Bio and/or Physics in November? Is Bio tough? I’m taking Bio II AP this year, so it would help to already have studied out of a SAT II book at the beginning of the year! I learned hardly anything in Physics this past year, but am very good at what we did do!

AP Exams: Chemistry – 5
Psychology – 5
U.S. History – 4
English Literature – 4

Friends of India – I need help on how to put this into my resume! This has been a big part of my life ever since I was really young. Basically this is a non-profit organization which puts on different cultural activities for the South Asian community in Las Vegas. It has 1000+ members. I’ve been participating in it since 1996 to 2006. I’ve done a lot through this organization including being on the Cultural Committee, having volunteered to put together their annual “phone/address book” making over hundred different ads for families/businesses around town (this is basically a graphic arts type of deal of which I lead), being the Master of Ceremonies for their annual Diwali celebration of which 1000+ attended, participating in numerous cultural Indian dances/fashion shows, setting up picnics and events, etc. I’ve done hundreds of hours of service for this organization, but it’s not logged, so do I estimate? How exactly do I put all this into my application lol?

Also, do we separate the community service we do out of school and the community service we do in clubs. Because I’ve done over 100+ hours in NHS, Key Club, and DECA doing community service but not sure how to show this?

My main question though is if I have a chance at 6/7/8 year medical programs? If so, can you give me some which would be safety, matches, and reach? I understand that I’m probably most lacking in extracurricular activities and honors/awards. Is their anything I can do to beef this up? I saw some resumes have ridiculous awards like Outstanding Attendance, National Honor Roll, Who’s Who’s, Prom Royalty….should I even bother putting things like this on their? Should I become a representative for Student Council or FBLA? How can I get in contact with someone to shadow a doctor? I want to volunteer more, but not sure how and where would be most beneficial. It was funny because the newspaper yesterday; the headline read “Nevada ranks last in Volunteerism.” Does the region I’m from help me get into schools? Because it seems as though people with much lower stats than those on CC get into places like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc. from my school? I’m not sure why that is…but my guess is that my school is so urban and in Nevada?

Yes, you definitely have a chance. Your grades are amazing and your test scores aren't bad either.

There's a lot of questions so I'll try and answer some of them.
-For the Friends of India you could mention how long you have been involved in it (1996-2006) and an estimate would do just fine. Everyone who mentions their stats usually round them anyway. List it as an EC.

-I think you show how many hours you've volunteered for clubs along with where you mention any leadership positions.

-You can get into a combined degree program, though I don't think you are lacking in any aspect. There's no need to mention awards like "Outstanding attendance" those are just random useless awards.

-Contact a doctor you might know personally and ask them if you can shadow them. Or call a hospital.

-The region you're in might help you. There are some states with dense populations that submit lots of applications and some with smaller populations that submit less . . . accepting more people from a less densely populated area would give the student body more variety.

You look pretty set for many of the schools...don't worry about redoing the SAT again (three times looks bad). All in all, you're awards, ECs, and test scores are average for the ivies and BA/MDs and grades-wise you are doing very well, but being from Nevada will definitely help out. Finally, being Indian male (I will assume you are) really hurts in admissions (especially, and I mean especially, to BA/MD programs). Overall, however, if your personality is on par and you do well on the interviews, you're in.

I'd be shocked i fyou didnt get in. I agree with Hydrogen, don't retake the SAT again.

Thanks guys for your comments. They really help out, and I'm not kidding. It really helps me better understand where I stand in college admissions.

Can anyone help me identify some schools I should be targeting.

I'm pretty much guessing Brown's program is out the picture, but what about Northwestern or Rice? USC? Rochester? I'd like to go to California if possible, but there's not that many good programs there. What would be considered a "safety" program for me (Ex. Drexel?).

In addition, should I bother to apply to Ivies, Stanford, etc.....do I have a shot?

If I don't, what can I do to become more competitive? Thanks again!

Why is Brown out? Rice is much harder than Brown. I hope you realize that.

Yes, apply to ivies if that's what you want.

A little bit off topic but I got first place on the General Marketing Test in New York this year.

friedymeister69: Nice, we have something in common lol.

Aspen D: Actually I didn't know that. I thought Brown was the most competitive. Is it the only Ivie league school with a program? You really think I have a chance at Brown?

Northwestern also has one, Brown's and NW's are considered the two hardest ones to get into. I think you could have a chance almost anywhere.

You have a good shot at Rochester. Also try Drexel and Temple. Northwestern, USC and Brown are a bit unpredicatable.

schrizto: Thanks, for the compliment and advice, but my stats aren't that great.

Fandango: Really? Is Rochester easier to get into than Drexel?

Hmm....any tips on what I can do to look better? Shadow a doctor? Internship somewhere? Are there any scholarships I should try for which would look good and notify me in time that I can put it on my applicatoin? Thanks!

Rice is so hard because of the Baylor part of the deal.

Aspen D: Yeah, I was researching and I think your right about that.

rochester is definitely harder than drexel

you have a great chance at ba/md programs; however i noticed that you said you have a great passion for SCIENCE. thats great, but you also have to show that you have a passion for medicine to get admitted to a ba/md program. Your "Friends of India" EC, in my opinion, is a pretty important one so be sure to emphasize it in your essays and show how it lead you to develop a love for medicine.

jcr182: Friends of India didn't really lead to a love for medicine?

I think he's fine. He shows a passion for something...which is good because it shows that he's a human and not a robot.

wow your stats and everything look pretty good to me, tho i really am no expert at judging.. just wanted to say that usc's pretty difficult to get into; they only accept about 30 people into their baccalaureate/md program.. but yeah, i agree there's not very many in ca... ucsd's medical scholars program is nice, but they only accept like 12 ppl who are state residents.
