Hope this is enough to get in a 7 year med program. Please tell me if you think i have a shot at it.

i think u have a fair shot, but i think its good if u do some type of research.the majority of kids that are getting into these programs did research. also, there are alot of med programs that strictly emphasize community service, so if u are applying to those types of med programs, it would be better if u embarked on another community service project besides the hospital cuz everybody applying to these programs have volunteered there. the brazil project thing will stand out so thats awesome. if u want to look really good, do a community project that really shows that u care about orphans or little children (i.e. big brothers big sisters). *u still have time, u are still a junior. other than that, good luck on your sat's and sat 2s.... btw what is octagon club??

Stats are good (assuming that is your SAT score), but more leadership roles would be good (Ping pong club President doesn't really count :)). Med programs love to see leadership.

Which programs are you looking at?

palmtree4, octagon club is like a community service club where you go around and like clean up parks and stuff. Thanks for the advice. Just wondering...what kinds of research things can high school kids do?

mikespan32, i just started to do some research on programs so i am not really that sure. I was interested in BU's 7 year BA/MD program and GWU's program. Since i live in NJ i was also looking into UMDNJ or TCNJ b/c they have 7 year programs. I heard drexel has a good program but i really didnt look too much into it.

i know they have summer research programs at major universities particularly for high school students. i know some people that went to summer programs at fsu (florida state university), uf (univ of florida), and univ of chicago. i know there are more than the 3 i have listed, so look around in the internet; im sure u will find more. oh, and i know in the northeast, they have nih (national institute of health) internship programs for hs students, but i dont know that much about them.

studyhard i think u have a good chance
make sure u write a compassionate essay on how the experience in brazil shaped u as a person
im planning to go to a foregin country with habitat for humanity next summer b4 my senior year and that is what most of my essays r gonna be about

If you get those scores then you a lock for SLU's 7-year program:
http://www.slu.edu/colleges/AS/phs/medScholars.html

I would also apply to UMKC's 6-year program. It is excellent, and you definitely have a chance.
http://www.umkc.edu/medicine

wow, UMKC's six year program seems intense, 11 month curriculum and one month vacation.....i dont think i have the work ethic to put up with that.....but SLU doesnt seem bad

The thing about the UMKC is that it is excellent if you know for sure you want to be a doctor. UMKC's program is great because, from day 1 you are in the hosptial getting clinical skills. In other programs you have to go through 3-4 years of english/history/etc...before you even start learning what you reall want to learn:medicine.

This thread has a lot of posts explaining why UMKC is so great:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=10493
More info: http://research.med.umkc.edu/prospective/sections/program/Viewbook.pdf

Also, I'd point you towards Meledious04. She's currently in the program and she could tell you more about it.

I know that there are alot of great things about UMKC and you start learning medicine right from the beginnning but is it really worth it. I saw your other post that had all of your stats on it and it was impressive and it seems that you are very passionate about becoming a doctor, but why do you want to rush into being a doctor so much. I think you should take a 7 yr program and ease the work load a little. The curriculum is 11 months and 1 month of vacation. In a curriculum that rigirous it doesnt seem like you have much time to yourself or to hang out with friends. I think that its worth waiting a year unless you are fully dedicated to the amount of work you are about to recieve.

From the people I know in the program: Yes, it's true you have to study, and study hard. But they still have plenty of free time to go do stuff in the evenings and weekends. In fact many are part of fraternities, etc...

Moreover, it can't hurt to apply. Apply, take the interview, take a tour, talk to the students and then if you don't feel like its for you, no harm done. But if you don't apply at the very least, you may regret it later.
