chances at admission

Hi, I'm a caucasian female from Florida's very lousy public school system, but I was curious is anyone could please give me an honest evaluation of my stats regarding where I'd like to apply this fall.

SAT I: Math (660), Critical Reading (670), Writing (740)
I've only taken the March one though, and I'll be retaking this in October. I think I could get the Math and Reading sections up closer to 1400 pretty easily.

SAT II: US History (730), Literature (660), but retaking the latter in November.

GPA Unweighted is 3.9130 and weighted is 4.3682. I'm currently ranked 9th out of 336, though my freshman class had around 760. Everyone drops out, what can I say?

EC's: Charter member and current President of MUN (10,11,12)
President of French Club (9,10,11,12)
Founder of Foreign Film Club (12)
Charter member and Secretary of Homeless Helpers (10)
Editor of School Newspaper (11,12)
National Honor Society (11,12)
Key Club (Community Service) (9,10)
(Also will be in National Art Honor Society this year)
French Summer Study Program in Nice, France (summer before 10)
French Summer Study Program in Montreal, Canada (summer before 12)

I've taken AP World History (4), AP English Language and Comp. (4), AP US History (3) (Still don't know how.), and this year am taking AP English Literature, AP European History, and AP Gov. My other classes this year are French IV (Honors), Journalism V (Honors), Econ. (Honors), and Physics (Honors). Couldn't fit Calculus into my schedule.

I'm going to be applying only regular decision because I really need financial aid in order in go.

What would you say are my chances realistically?

I think that your chances are VERY good; nothing is 100% guaranteed, but I think you have a good shot at Colby-- raising those SATs couldn't hurt, and, most likely, will help (lol, that was obvious, sorry). My resume went like so:

740 V
680M
650Writing
(this was the old SAT plus an SATII Writing)

AP US 4
AP World 3
AP Bio 4 (though this wasn't known when I applied)

lots of EC's posted somewhere on these forums, lol, but too tried to type them all

grades were 94.7 weighted
public school in Central/Upstate NY

and I am a Freshman there :-P. I absolutely LOVE Colby too (just as a side note), and COOT is amazing!

Just make sure your essay/s is/are good and that you show thorough and sincere interest in them... that is only if it's truly sincere, lol. My "supplemental" question "What draws you to Colby?" was answered in a 500 word essay/story of my overnight visit to Colby and how much I loved everything.

Yes, I am sincerely interested. :-) I would say it's probably my number 1 choice right now by a little bit and when I took a tour there at the end of July I was just blown away by how gorgeous the campus was, how nice all the people were, and just the general feel that it gives off. Could you tell me though (because this is my major concern) if there's a lot to do around Waterville between the city and the college? I'm sort of afraid that there wouldn't be, but does it seem like there's always a lot going on?

OH MY WORD! lol, that's the best question ever because that was my huge concern, and... Colby is amazing. There is never a dull moment on campus; between the 150+ clubs, randomly scattered events (last night was a showing of "crash"-- perhaps the best movie I've ever seen-- and the night before that was a lecture by NASA Solar System Exploration Science Director Carl Pilcher on Earth-like planets beyond our Earth), school-sponsored events (Loudness, the "Glow Dances," and a Dane Cook performance in October), the $2 movie theater in Waterville, the incredibly close-knit student body, and the beautiful wilderness that is Maine, you'll hardly be able to get more than 4 hours of sleep a night, lol-- but don't worry, it's very easy to get a good nights rest if you really want one. Anyhue, Colby is a very happening campus-- I love it (and this is a big deal coming from a chem-free, non-drinker (redundant, I know), etc, lol.

Best of luck on your college experience!

P.S. A great way to show your interest is to apply ED.

Werd814: From what you are saying, it sounds like their reputation of drinking hasn't been a problem for you. My son liked Colby, but everything we have read indicated that a non-drinker may feel out of place. I know they had chem-free housing, which interested him, but he still is concerned whether he would fit in if drinking is quite prevalent. Also, is there a wide range of personality types. We visited during the summer and it didn't seem as preppy as we had heard, but there obviously were a limited number of students on campus. How are the dorms. The one room we saw was very tiny. He liked that the dorms were mixed with students of all classes. Thanks

My room is actually a triple, and it is VERY spacious (295 square feet). The substance-free housing is very cool and people who do drink are VERY tolerant of non-drinkers so he won't find himself ostricized from the "drinking" population of students if he prefers to hang out with them, and even better than that, it's very very easy to have a great time without drinking here and a lot of great people who are non-drinkers-- so if your son doesn't want to be around drinkers, he can still have a great time (tonight, for example, there's actually a Pirate Dance; haha, I love Colby). However, drinking is, I won't lie, very prevalent on campus on the weekends.

The population is fairly homogeneous in that most (though not all) students are caucasion, however, there is a wide variety of personality types on campus. Overall, the students here are the friendliest people I've ever met in my entire life, and the great part about it is the "clique" thing is virtually non-existent-- which makes it even sweeter of a school. There are SO many great things at Colby, so many services available at no extra charge to the students (for instance: I just took the free Colby taxi to the Super Wal Mart in town today), and so many opportunities here.
