Recs
At Amherst a counselor's rec is required and mine loves me. I aid for her and she said that if she ever had a daughter she would want her to be just like me. My two teacher recs are from teachers who have taught me for 2 and 4 years.

My school is a very big public school(1900 students) and it is ranked number one in the state. We don't have class rank or weighted GPA but I am in the top 10% of my class.

I have visited Amherst and written a letter and emailed my admissions officer.
I know it is a crapshoot but can anyone try and tell me what my chances are. For instance, do you think I have less than a 25% chance of getting in ED? Please help me.

Keep in mind that Amherst ranks as the second-toughest liberal arts school to get into in the country (tied with Swarthmore) and right behind Harvey Mudd, which is #1.

The average SAT scores at Amherst in 2005 were 722/721/710 (2153), with an average GPA UW of around 3.82 or so. The 25% scores were 680/680/680 (2040) meaning 75% of the admitted class had better SATs than this. Amherst admitted

Your UW GPA is 3.91 and your SAT scores are 660/700/650 (2110). However your only Bs were in your freshman year--you've had all As since.

Your school ranks #1, and you've taken a very tough courseload, however, your ECs, while acceptable, aren't fantastic. On the other hand, you say your counselor recommendation will be excellent--and you expect to write a good essay.

I consider you have about a 50% to 55% chance at acceptance normally. If you apply ED, you probably are about a 55% chance for acceptance if your essay is excellent.

Best of luck to you.

You appear to have a relatively advantageous geographical region, i.e. Kentucky, which might bring your chances up a notch to fair, and w/o that would otherwise probably be poor, but still not competive per se.

For example, had you been applying from states concentrated in the northeast USA, it would seem your odds would have to be deemed poor.

Does anyone else have anymore advice?

Lrich01, I'd have to agree with the assertion that your SAT scores are poor by Amherst standards. I remember talking to my professor one day he said "one of the great things about being in Amherst is that you can say that a score of 720 is low". I definitely advise that you bring your SAT scores up a bit before you apply.

And don't sweat your ECs the important thing here is your committement to any one activity and what you take away from it. If you can reflect that in your application, you should be fine.

Needless to say, you also need a stellar essay.....everyone does.
