Chances at Brown, Amherst, Northwestern and such

So, here we go...

Ethnicity: Asian
Sex: Male
Catholic high school, very competitive.

Academics:
W GPA 4.1
Top 10%
4 APs: Calc AB, Physics B, USH, and Chemistry. Predicting at least a 4 on all of them.
ACT: 25 (because of some unforeseen circumstances), retaking it again and targeting a 30+

Senior year APs: Calc BC, Physics C, US gov, and English Lit.

Total APs offered at our school: 12 including French and Spanish

I took an intro to psych class at a local community college and got 98 in it.

I want to get into the engineering field, most likely mechanical.

I asked five teachers--calc, physics, chem, history and our school president--to write my recommendation letters, and all of them said they will write excellent letters for me. Do you think it's a little too much? Or it's enough to show that I'm a strong person with good work ethics?

Everything else:

Crew (11,12). Very dedicated. Probably will get recruited. But lets say if I don't...

Track sophomore year.

Theater (10), but had to quit because of scheduling conflict with crew practice.

President of Recycling Club (12).

Member of Science Olympiad team (11,12).

Founder of Rocketry team.

Link Crew member (mentoring incoming freshmen and help them adjust to the high school life) (12).

Tutoring.

Student Council (10).

NHS president (12).

Peer mediation.

Multi-lingual (fluent in English, Chinese, and conversational German).

I performed hundreds of hours of community service at varies places.

I work part time at a bank as a teller.

My mom has a bachelor degree in teaching. My dad never went to college. I don't even think he finished high school due to financial reasons.

Approximate family income range: 40k to 50k

Also, I'm a young junior. I turned 16 in February so I will still be 17 until my second semester in college.

Some schools in mind:
Northwestern
Chicago
Notre Dame
Dartmouth
U Penn
Syracuse
Trinity Hartford
Brown
Amherst
Villanova

The problem I have right now is that I have a lot of very selective schools in mind, but I need more suggestions on safety schools. In other words, schools I will most likely get into once I apply; not the easy ones but the ones that are selective yet not as selective as Penn or Dartmouth.

THANKS FOR STOPPING BY!

Work hard to improve your ACT to a 34 or higher for most of these schools. If you are a recruited athlete and are given support, it could be lower. The coaches can give you the minimum score that you will need.

Say if I dont get recruited, the only thing I need to improve is my ACT score?

^For the most part… Your EC’s aren’t that spectacular either because most of them you joined during junior and senior year. It kind of looks like you realized junior year that you need to do some extra-curricular activities, so you just joined anything you could… Not sure if that’s how colleges will see it, but that’s what i saw when I read your EC’s…

Regardless, good luck next year! I’m sure wherever you end up, you’ll be very successful! :)

Fairly confident that those schools are all big reaches at this point in time. I’m not sure what an “unforeseen circumstance” would constitute, but would it affect your composite that dramatically? I doubt it.

The extra curriculars are a point of weakness as well. I don’t see anything overly impressive – a lot of random activities that show no passion or dedication.

I don’t see you being an ultra-competitive candidate at those institutions. With that being said, find some more accessible schools. Apply to a handful of these reaches, but make sure there are other opportunities.

Good luck.

you’re all set except for ACT. That needs to be much higher. Good ECs

My newest ACT is a 31. What changes now?
