Chances at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Hello everyone... I want to know what my chances are for Cal Poly SLO. I'm a Chinese American student attending a very good high school in California.

I'm currently a high school senior.

HS GPA (so far) - (3.3)
SAT Scores - CR-560, MATH-650, W-500 (1710)
2 years Cross-Country Team, 1 year in Track Team
General Member of Math Club
General Member of Computer Engineering Club
Worked as a tutor at a local learning clinic during summer of 2006.
2 Time LA Marathon Runner and Finisher
Designed and coded a Website for a City Council Candidate
Resident of California.

I was put into a SDAIE Geometry class (English Language Development Geometry) and the counselor didn't do anything about it after all the begging. I had a low first semester academic GPA (2.8) during my Sophomore year in high school due to family issues.

For both semesters of my junior year, I got a 3.67 GPA.

Current senior year schedule:

English 7/8
Economics 1/2
Critical Analysis/Composition 1/2
AP Calculus AB 1/2
AP Physics B 1/2
AP Computer Science AB 1/2

I'm planning to major in Computer Science if I do get into Cal Poly SLO.

So what're my chances?

Slight Reach. CP SLO is an unusually difficult CSU to get into. It has an admissions rate comparable to UCSD (although one can argue that the caliber of applicants differs) and, what's more, you're applying to its engineering school, which is a very strong program and more likely than not very impacted as well. If you can bring your SATs up a bit more, you could have a better chance. Otherwise, while one can't necessarily say you have no chance, you sure don't fit the average profile of an admitted student.

Cal Poly SLO is a match. Your GPA is fine for it; your SAT is at the average; your course load is very rigorous. These three are most important. On top of that, your ECs are taken into consideration, so that should get you in. Although Cal Poly is probably the most difficult CSU to get into, CSUs are generally not difficult to get into; you're at the average, above average in ECs, which will make up for the fact that you're applying for a competitive major (not to mention that your ECs show a passion for what you're going into).
