Chances at Dartmouth..Im a special case so I'm worried (Dartmouth is my #1)

Please either just chance me or don't make comments. I'm sure you remember what it was like applying to colleges.

GPA: 3.43 UW
Projected for Time of Application GPA: 3.54 uw
This GPA was because of only one year that brought it down due to family issues which will be the heart of my essay. Following that one semester, my grades shot back up. You can see from the grades below.

I took the SAT two days ago, and im fairly certain i got a 2250+.
If not ill be disappointed. If i get lower than a 2150 ill take it again.

I went to a large public school in 9th and 10th grade.

I go to a private school (11th and 12th) which i think helps because of the competitive curriculum. It sends one or two (out of a graduating class of 40) to one of the best schools each year. This year was JHU, people have been sent to MIT etc...

Sports :
Freshman Basketball Team (9th)
JV Basketball Team (10th)
JV Soccer (9th,10th)

Math Prefect (12th)
Science Prefect (12th)

Volunteer Work :
Hands to Work (Volunteer Work) - 125 Hours
An additional 200 hours will be done this summer at a local animal shelter (SPCA) and a local hospital.

AP Tests :
Calculus AB - Projected 4
AP European History 3

Any classes that offered honors i took.
My current private school does not offer any honors or AP classes, but is a "college preparatory" school.

Getting a job this summer as well...40 hours a week.

On my regents finals for New York

Also this summer, the Washington and Lee Summer Scholars program in Science and Medicine is looking like something I will be doing. As well I'm applying to Northwestern University Summer College Prep/Credit Course. Hopefully I'll be doing oen of the two.

I was suspended for 3 days for being behind a closed door with a girl. (Private school rule)

Oh and I'm a lower class white male.

My sister graduated from Cornell
My brother currently goes to Cornell
My mom was a high school drop out
My father is a Russian Orthodox Priest

What do my chances look like?

Applying for Pre-Med

I feel like I have no chance.
I plan on applying Early Decision.
Any opinions...about my chances that is...

That suspension thing might hurt.

ive been told by over 10 people that it shouldnt have any effect at all though :/

your mom is a high school drop out and your dad is a russian orthodox priest? i bet you'll get in, but i really don't know! good luck, though!

yeah my life is ridiculous.

Try not to use your family issue as an "excuse" for your gpa drop. Keep the gpa mention in your essay to a minimum.

I think your grades will be OK, once you explain your special circumstances. However, I'm not sure you're enough of a knockout for the likes of Dartmouth. I think you will get into a very good school -- but I don't know if it will be an Ivy. JMHO.

i was thinking maybe write an essay, and write an additional piece explaining the circumstances from my sophomore year?

hey. it never hurts to try. life happens. college people realize this. sometimes they like you. sometimes they don't. the suspension thing... probably won't be a big issue. i know for boarding schools where kids get in trouble for room visit, drinking, car permission, etc. ... colleges really actually don't care. it's academic stuff (ie plagiarism and cheating) that are huge issues

sweet.
thanks for the advice

ah, well, I'm kinda a special case as well, and my grades were on a decline since 10th grade through senior year. I appled for the class of 2011 and I wrote an essay explaining my citcumtances. I got waitlisted. I just sent an update letter just now too. We'll see how this all turns out.

thats good to hear, i hope you get accepted :)
Where else did you get in?
Its good to know that colleges actually will take that stuff into consideration from an actual person who went through it.

bump.....?

Poster stated that he was waitlisted. Unfortunately Dartmouth's freshman class is over enrolled and Furstenberg has already stated that Dartmouth not be going to the wait list this year.

Have your guidance counsleor explain your drop in grades. Unless this has been a truly defining moment in your life and not just woe is me, I would refrain from making it my main essay.

What are your SAT II scores?

If you get into the Washington and Lee Summer Scholars program in Science as a scholarship recipient, that would definitely be worth mentioning (or else there would be a disconnect between stating that you are a low income studnet and paying for a summer program).

the things that may hurt you are: Your GPA, Being from NY where most of the elite schools are not at a loss of applicants.

In the end all you can do is toss your hat in and let the process play itself out. Good luck to you

Ihavent taken any SAT II's yet.
However Ive done a lot of research and im not (too) concerned.
Im taking Math II, French, and probably Biology. Should be a cakewalk.
Yeah the only way im going to the summer program is with a hefty financial aid pack.
Yeah NY sucks. However for Cornell it helps :)

sorry for the double post, but i just looked at the Dartmouth acceptances and scores, etc. I feel like i shouldnt even both applying anymore..

Even though im still going to. (ED)!

bump......

Did you finally get in?
