Chances at Engineering Schools

Can you guys estimate how good of a chance I have getting into some of these schools? I know this won't determine me getting into these schools but I'm curious. And just to note, as said in the title, I will apply to the engineering schools of these colleges. And if I can, I want to go for the honors programs but won't be disappointed if I don't get in.

So here are my schools

Cal Poly SLO
UT Austin
Texas A&M
Embry Riddle (Prescott)
University of San Diego (safety)

You can recommend other schools but I don't want to go past Texas as far as travel goes, so no east coast schools for me.

And here's about me

I'm going to be an upcoming senior in the fall. I have a Mexican and White ethnicity. My family's income is middle-high. I go to a competitive private high school in California. It's a Catholic school and I believe it's one of the better ones in the nation. One thing to know is we don't rank. We offer college placement, honors, and AP courses. I want to major in engineering in college and I'm torn right now for what I want to do. I'm thinking about majoring directly into aerospace for a B.S. and then getting a job right out of college. I'm also thinking about getting a B.S. in mechanical and then a M.S. in aerospace. Any input on this would be very appreciated.

My unweighted GPA is at least a 3.7

My weighted GPA is at least a 4.1

My best ACT test score out of two attempts is a 30 so far. I took it again and am waiting for my scores. I know that places don't really superscore but if you're wondering, it would be a 31.

Like I said, our school doesn't rank but I'm guessing I'll be in the top 10% but if not then I will be so close like top 11% or 12%.

My extracurricular activities include playing on the golf team for 3 years (will be 4 next year), being a varsity athlete for 2 years (3 next year), also I will probably be captain next year, I'm a member of both the California Scholarship Federation and National Honor Society, I don't know the exact amount of service hours I have but I will have at least 100+ by the time I graduate. I don't have many clubs/activities because I focus on school more and there aren't many that interest me. Our school may get a new engineering club next year and if so, I will join that. The other thing that sucks is that we will get a new Engineering Magnet Program but I can't join because you have to be an incoming freshman or sophomore.

I have some little quick facts about my high school career. I have never gotten below a 4.0 (weighted) for every semester I've been in school. I've received some school related awards for golf which includes scholar athlete. I've been on the honor roll every time.

Here's my course load

Freshman: Religion I, Spanish I Honors, Biology, Freshman Success/Health, English I Honors, Geometry Honors, a 7th period golf class

Sophomore: World History, Religion II, Spanish II Honors, Chemistry, Digital Photo, English II, Algebra II/Trigonometry Honors

Junior: U.S. History, Religion III Honors, Spanish III Honors, Physics Honors, History of Sports, English III, PreCalculus Honors

Senior year will include: U.S. Gov/Econ, Religion IV Honors, Spanish IV, AP Physics B, English IV, AP Calculus AB, and another 7th period golf class

My course load isn't that great but I want to explain something. I haven't taken any AP classes so far because I really like math and science and not history and english so I didn't sign up for those AP courses, which are offered junior year. I've always been dedicated to my schoolwork so I don't want colleges to think I'm lazy or something. Plus, I didn't take any AP math or science courses yet and here's why. To be in AP Calc AB as a junior, that's really hard to do and not many people accomplish that so PreCalc honors is where most upper tier juniors are at. So I will take AP Calc next year. For science, I couldn't take AP Chem this past year because I didn't take Chem Honors which was stupid of me because I could have easily done it but wanted a particular teacher and I regret that. And I didn't take AP Bio sophomore year because Pre-Med kids mainly took that and I don't want to go into medicine. And I couldn't take AP Physics C as a junior because I wasn't in Calculus, which as I explained is hard to do. So I took Physics honors which was basically the same thing, in fact we were ahead of the AP class. And we had a tough instructor and next year, they will be "dumbing" down the class so it won't be hard anymore. Our class was full of very smart kids this year but next year it may not be the same, not to say that there won't be smart kids or anything but it definitely won't be the same. So I'll take AP Physics B next year which will only have like 8 students from the Physics Honors class. And I dropped AP Spanish because my counselor said you have to pretty fluent and I'm not so I figured I'd rather get an A in Spanish IV rather than a B and fail on the AP exam for AP Spanish.

Sorry about the novel but thanks for anyone that will read this and give input.

can anyone chance me?

Can someone please put in their thoughts

I can speak about the Texas schools. You will be an auto-admit to A&M. Getting into engineering will be more challenging. Your GPA, class rank and test scores will give you decent chance.

For UT-Austin the odds are less. There is no auto-admit for OOS applicants. Your class rank is OK but GPA and test scores are average for engineering. Cockrell School of Engineering is very competitive. Increase the test score to have a better chance. Your GPA really can’t change between now and when you apply. One tip is to apply early, very early to both.

UT is normally in the top tier engineering programs and A&M is very well respected too. It will depend on which engineering discipline you choose.

^He is from California so no automatic admission

You are correct. I missed he was from California.

Thanks for the responses so far. I know my credentials and test scores aren’t the best but if I have at least a shot at it then I’m okay. I won’t be heart broken if I don’t get into A&M or UT, after all I haven’t even visited the places I’m only going off of their reputation. I’ll only visit them if I get admitted.

Also for UT, would aerospace be harder to get into than mechanical? I feel like it would but I just want to confirm.

good chances.

I realize this comment is probably far overdue, but…

E-R Prescott’s honors program is fantastic… having gone through it myself I would highly recommend it to anyone able to get in.
