I realize this may seem like a fairly juvenile question to be asking, but I was hoping that someone knowledgeable might be able to evaluate my chances at a few schools to study Spanish literature, specifically 19th & 20th century Peninsular. The schools I would most like to attend is Columbia Univ. or UPenn. I posted my stats below:

Undergraduate School: DePauw Univ.
Major: Romance Languages/Latin American & Caribbean Studies (double)
Cum. GPA: 3.72
Major GPA: 3.9
GRE: 620/680 (too low?)

My recommendations, CV and SOP should be solid. Just wondered if anyone had any insight regarding the matter.

Thank you.

your GPA is pretty impressive. having the background in romance languages and LA studies is also pretty solid. i’m assuming you’re fluent in spanish (would seem obvious but you never know).

which score is your verbal score? if you have a 620 verbal, that would be a little low for the ivy league schools. they generally want to see you over the 90th percentile for most grad programs and over the 95th percentile for the top programs/ivies. i know that 670 was 95th percentile last year… 680 verbal would be high enough for most schools.

that’s all i can really offer in terms of insight.

Thanks for the info. My verbal score was 620, which is why I am re-taking the exam. As for other possible choices for graduate school, I was wondering if you or anyone knew anything about the NYU in Madrid Program. It seems like a solid program, but I was hoping to learn more about the typical applicant to that program. Once again, thanks for the advice and information.
