Chances at Harv, Stan, Princ

And again.

GPA: 4.0 Ranking: Top 2-3%
sorry, a lot of people actually look at this thread, so it's faster this way

Well your test scores are great, as is your GPA, of course. The only thing to brush up on is extracurriculars. You show breadth but only a certain amount of depth. It's one thing to do 8 years of band and quite another to excel in band for those 8 years. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "pretty well" - you could be being modest - but it seems to me like your commitment here is halfway between somewhat shallow and somewhat deep. Also, "decent" teacher recommendations probably aren't going to be very good for your chances. Regardless, you certainly have outperformed in academics. Great job.

Stanford EA - Mid-High Reach (I say high because you have the academics but lack demonstrated passion, at least to my knowledge)
Case Western - Safety
Cornell - Mid-Low Match
WashU St. Louis - High Match/Low Reach
Johns Hopkins - Match
Wake Forest - Safety

Then again, what do I know? I'm just a high school kid seeking a little solace online through the approval of people who have more insight into college admissions than I do.

i agree,
buts its like that for most people
chance me plz,
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/592751-chancing-near-impossibility.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/592751-chancing-near-impossibility.html</a></p>

i think u have a pretty good chance with everything except for ur scores. Although they def won't throw u out of running, it would be hard to go up against rest of the people applying to these powerhouses. But overall a good chance.

Chance me back? <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/592787-chance-me-pls-i-will-chance-back.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/592787-chance-me-pls-i-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

My post up there was meant for Dante09 - can't edit my post to say that now :(

Stanford,-reach (no one is good here)
Harvard-erm i wouldnt count too much on it
Princeton,-high match/reach
Columbia,-likely
University of Virginia,-in
Brigham Young University,-in
Virginia Tech-in

Thanks Aegis.

Not a chance at HSP or even Columbia for that matter...slim chances at the rest...

"Slim" chances at Virginia Tech? Why did I even ask...

jeez dude...you know what I mean...I'm referring to the tough ones when I say "the rest"...obviously you're in at VATech

Well now I know what you mean. Thanks for chancing me, anyway.

thanks for your analysis.
since your ranks isn't so high, you need high SATs.
work on your math sat 1. also subject tests..must be over 700 for all.
over 750 preferably.

i see that you excel in latin. but how come did you not go to national tournaments?

Stanford - high reach
Harvard - high reach
Princeton - high reach
Columbia - high reach
University of Virginia - match
Brigham Young University - match
Virginia Tech. - match

You're welcome. But my rank is because of freshman year. Maybe I need to make that more clear, and make sure other people don't freak out about their rank because they messed up freshman year. See, top schools, especially Ivies, disregard freshman year. At least I know Princeton and Columbia do. They just recalculate your GPA accordingly. Do you think that will make any difference?

And yeah, my SAT scores need to be improved... I didn't really study for them :/ SAT subject tests will be done in December. I messed up badly on two out of three - but the last is over 700 and possibly over 750 as well. :D

I didn't go to national tournaments, except for taking the National Latin Exam in freshman year, because they were expensive. I could have likely done very well at JCL/Junior Classical League but that involved paying money which I didn't have.

Thanks for your analysis too!

yeah ivies don't consider freshmen gpa that much.
although they recalculate the gpa, your rank wouldn't change, which plays a crucial role.
but don't stress about it.

your SATs do need work. get 700s+ and you'll be in a much better shape.

Going and placing at JCL would have strengthened your resume.
but just mention in your essay how you wanted to go, but couldn't.
and highlight your competence in latin
:)

True. Rank is so stupid...I wish my school didn't calculate it... I agree with the Ivy admissions officer who said "the GPA has become the most meaningless number in the college applications process" or something like that.

Yeahh! I could write an essay in Latin or something. And make it witty too. Haha.

Thanks for replying again!

/bump to first page

hahaha yeah i was thinking of writing my essay in a bunch of languages (Im pretty good at a number of them)

anyways:
Stanford (insert an adjective) reach? (I don't really understand the people who get in at Stanford from my school lol)
Harvard high reach (SATs/grades)
Princeton mid/high reach (ecs are good)
Columbia mid/high reach (ditto)
University of Virginia match
Brigham Young University match
Virginia Tech match

about rank: well, I do believe it is pretty important. It shows how you did compared to other people at your school. It can be unfair, though. My grade at my school is insane...we're speculating that cum laude society (what we call the top 10% gpa-wise for senior class) will be above a 4.0 (weighted, obviously) avg...versus the normal 3.8 or 3.7...................dayum... Anyways you can't do anything about it now, but you should recognize that grades do matter a lot to these schools...well until you cure cancer or something.

/bump to top of the page

Thanks for the chance vaniificat.

I agree with johnny.lee:
Stanford - high reach
Harvard - high reach
Princeton - high reach
Columbia - high reach
University of Virginia - match
Brigham Young University - match
Virginia Tech. - match
