Chances at Harvard

What about having a better SAT score than your valedictorian?

lol I'm a little confused at how you guys say that having 2400 doesn't help your chances at harvard
1/2 of 2400 scorers get in harvard - isn't that a big enough of an advantage? to have a 50% chance of getting in somewhere, as compared to most people, who get only 5 or 6%?
hmm...

well said STUCKatUofT

Hey Stuck ;)
One of the most important thing in the observation that people frequently miss is that correlation does NOT equal causation. Of course, statistically speaking, 50% of perfect SAT-scorers get into the Ivies, but you have to remember that there's a lurking variable. In other words, getting a 2400 does not CAUSE your acceptance at the Ivies, rather, people who get 2400s generally tend to be equally good at their ECs and other stuff as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that getting a perfect score doesn't look good in the Admissions office, but it is not everything (and thus explains the other 50% of perfect scorers who are rejected).

Harvard's only going to accept you if you've got a passion for something i.e sports music art . You've got to be oustanding in one of the EC's that you do, which you don't exactly have. Standing out from the crowd is key and make Harvard interested in you. If you're just some average Joe, forget harvard. But you're SAT scores are superb so its definately not gaurenteed that you'll be rejected. Good Luck

dunno about harvard or yale, but i can definitely see you getting into dartmouth.

haha that's the only one of the schools I mentioned that I chose not to apply to. I did get into Duke as a Trinity and Benjamin Duke Scholarship finalist, so I was incredibly psyched about that.

dude how did you get that Duke scholarship? Is that only for athletes?

I only became a finalist, I won't know how it turns out until mid april, and as far as i know it doesn't have much to do with athletics

you really do not belong at harvard. anyone who gets a perfect score and then takes it again is much too stupid to go to a highly prestigous college such as Harvard. maybe you should try NC State.

what the...? sweatpants is clearly jealous. I think this guy deserves more than NC state. People who go to NC State can get in with SAT's of 1800 or so. Not saying that it's a bad school though - it's excellent for engineering and textiles and that sort of thing (I think they are #1 in the world for textiles?) - but if this guy wants to go to Harvard, it's definitely within his reach. Why call him stupid?

Don't only a few people a year (~10?) manage both a 2400 on the SAT and a 36 on the ACT? That's very impressive, and it will have increased your chances from the supposed "50/50" of a 2400 alone. Of course, it's not all about test scores, but it's not as if the rest of your application is poor.

And sweatpants, I'm pretty sure the OP's December 2005 SAT score came before the 2400. roll eyes

hey woolfe what school do you do LD for? (not a stalker, just wondering)

You're just like one kid who graduated from my school couple of years back
1600/36/4.0/All 5s on APs...he was an Intel/Siemens Semifinalist, soccer 4 years, All-State orchestra, etc.

I guess your chances are similar to his. He was admitted and he's a pretty cool guy.

if all else fails, you have that silly old college in north carolina to fall back on. pshaw, better hope that doesnt happen :-p

to an admissions officer, i dont think they will see a big difference between a 2200 and a 2400. Sure, one is two hundred points higher than the other, but they are both high enough.
At this level of things, they would consider other things that go beyond scores and gpa, are you outgoing and active?. This can come from recommendations, research, awards and community involvment. They want to admit students who genuinely want to broaden their intellectual horizons and who have actively been doing so in highschool. Personality is also very important, if you genuinly love helping people, express this in your essay in your own unique style.

you have a good chance. i think u'll get in

good luck

let's us know when you do (hopefully)

sweatpants,
as admirable and keen your sense of humor is, and believe me i was impressed at what a trenchant truth your brilliant jape brought to this discussion, i'd prefer we keep personal commentary and your obvious supremacy to the many boards purposed especially for your glory and exaltation.
