the answer to the $64,000 is not what are your chances, but what is going to differientiate you from all of other people for who these same words are showing up on their application?

Maybe the active interest in Poltics? Not common for indians.

yea. asains of all decents have a hard time because a large percentage of the applicant pool is asain.

hmm....anyone?

Which ivies are you interested in?

hardcore republican?.......

do you know it is those same hardcore republicans who have raped and murdered Sikhs mistakening them for muslim terrorists?...

anyway, you may get into a few ivies.

you know, Gidean, I applaud your awareness of the Sikh religion, however the blame cannot be placed on the republican party; zealots are zealots regardless of their party affiliation. as a religious person I cannot support the democratic platform with a clear conscience...Pro-life is the way to go for me.

I want to apply to Harvard, Yale, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, CalTech, etc.

You presently read as another qualified but not exceptional Asian candidate at the same colleges every qualified Asian in America applies to. Have some matches and safeties you love.

simranchawa,
you've got a lot going for you, and certainly have a shot at the schools on your list. However, you need some that are less insanely competitive. I would suggest that you look at Rice and Northwestern.

"do you know it is those same hardcore republicans who have raped and murdered Sikhs mistakening them for muslim terrorists?..."

you say that like all muslims are terrorists and the only justification for not having raped and murdered those Sikhs were because they were not Muslim... that's not the case, innocent people, regardless of religion, should be left alone...

anyways since when have republicans raped and murdered sikhs? i never knew america invaded india...

Balbir Singh Sodhi (Peace be upon him) was murdered at a gas station in 2001; his killer thought he was Bin Laden. Although America never invaded India, Sikhs have bore the brunt of the hate against the middle east, ive had more than one racist comment directed towards me since 2001...:\ oh well....

Thank you for the advice....Does anyone know if winning the Rensselaer medal would help for college admissions?

^^^
my boyfriend won the Rensselaer medal and got into Rensselaer with a half tuition merit scholarship. He also got into Stanford where he will be attending school next year. However, don't think of the medal as securing you a place at any school, think of it as a recognition of your ability to succeed. My boyfriend had a 4.0 unweighted in all APs and honors with a high SAT score so it probably wasn't the medal that got him in.
Bottom line: The medal means you are a great student and Rensselaer has recognized you but does not give you a real edge over other applicants.

you only had three advanced classes in junior year, will that be enough?

5 advanced classes.....2 AP's and 2 Utica math/science center.....an one honors english.

I have a very close friend who is also Sikh. We would talk about how unfair it was that he is still classified as "asian" even though Sikhs are a very small minority of the Indian population and certainly add to the diversity of a student body. Anyway, he didn't really want to go to Ivy Leagues so he's going to UC Berkeley next year =D

You seem very well qualified, just go for it and you'll probably get into at least one Ivy!

hmmm.....ok.....

The Rensselaer medal means that your teachers think highly of you - it is another piece of the puzzle that, along with your score and grades and essays will help the admissions committee to see you as a person that they want to admit. At the top schools, its not so much a matter of whether or not you are qualified (they have plenty of qualified candicates from which to choose) but whether you will add some to the life of the college at some point.

I will tell you something that I have noticed. At least here on cc, most of the essays written by technical people were pretty uninspiring - at least to begin with. If you can go beyond that and give them a true picture of you - especially the intellectual processes that go on beneath that turbin - you're going to have a shot. I can't predict your results at schools that reject 9 of 10 candidates; no one can. But a good essay will help.

Looking over your background, I see that you have many volunteer hours. I would encourage you to obtain an additional recommedation from one of the doctors with whom you have worked.

Finally, if you refer to your position on abortion in your application (and I advise against it in most cases), be very careful as to how you couch your opioion of people of opposing beliefs. In one of your earlier posts, you implied that all democrats were irreligious. Do I find that personally offensive? Well, yes, actually. But you clearly have strong personal beliefs so I am willing to respond. Just remember, though, that every word in an application counts. You can state your own belief without demonizing the oppositon.

Thank you, ohio_mom...that was a very thoughtful post and I appreciate the advice. Although I am a republican and thus inherently against abortion, I in no way believe that one cannot be religious and support the democratic platform. Peoples' interpretation of religion differ. I probably won't mention any of my political positions on my college applications, however I do plan to show which candidate I campained for and the ways I was invovled in politics during my high school years.

Should I take my SAT's/ACT's again or are they ok?

Yes, its fine to show political activism. I think that you might want to give the ACT another shot if you have the time and energy to do so - I'll bet you can do better - and if you do worse ACT is score choice so you can hide it.
