Chances at Muhlenberg?

Hello! I am currently a junior in high school and I have completely fallen in love with Muhlenberg! Here is a rundown of my high school career thus far:

Freshman year: All regular classes except honors English, GPA was 2.7

Sophomore year: GPA 3.0, all regular classes except for English honors again

First semester junior year: 3.8, no honors classes

ACT score is a 24, but I have plans to retake it and I’m sure I could get a 25 or higher!

My parents and I decided it would be best to not take honors classes this year to give me a chance to develop a good work ethic after a rough first half of high school. The story of the first half of my high school career is a long and complicated story, but I summarized it as short as I could make it for this. I was diagnosed with ADHD inattentive type very late, late in my sophomore year. Struggled a lot until then without realizing why, but I’ve been receiving a lot of help and have made huge strides since my diagnosis! A friend committed suicide sophomore year which drove me to a low point and I felt like I was never going to be able to come back from it, but I’ve worked really hard to bring myself out of that and am happy to say that I am a completely different person now than I was a year ago. Also struggle with anxiety and have a 504 plan at my school.

I really, really like Muhlenberg and could definitely see myself doing well there! I know my grades aren’t the best and my ACT score is on the lower side of their range, but is there still a chance I could get in? Or is there anything I could do to increase my chances?

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you

I also have plans to major in Psychology:)

@pearlsky12 Well, it may be a little bit of a stretch, but the upward trend in your grades is a positive. Colleges like to see that your grades are constantly improving. I would make sure you keep a fairly good GPA now. Also, I would work on getting your standardized test scores up. Maybe get a book and study or take a few practice tests. I know that SAT partnered with Khan academy to give students free study materials, so that’s an affordable option. Also, if you do end up applying, there is a section in the common app that lets you mention additional information. I would explain your struggle with ADHD and how it wasn’t diagnosed until your sophomore year. That may give your evaluators some context for your situation. Good luck though!! I hope you get in!!!

IMHO there are some things that you could do to improve your chances for Muhlenberg. One, get in touch with your admissions rep and arrange the official visit. Do the tour, do an interview, tell them your back story but in a positive way. Let it be known that you want Muhlenberg and then figure out why Muhlenberg should want you. They want to get to know their possible students. What are you passionate about? What will you bring to the campus community that they would be interested in? It doesn’t have to be a sport or the theater, you just need to show them how you will enrich the campus community. You could be a writer for the paper, a black belt, a photographer, you might be passionate about volunteering, your religion or even politics! You haven’t given any EC’s so I don’t know your passion but I am sure you have one, make sure they know it! Best of luck to you!

Thank you both very much! I retook my ACT and got a 26, and I’m going to take it one or two more times just to be sure. I plan to major in psychology but most of my extracurriculars surround music. I am in a singing group outside of school as well as having joined theatre this year and being in my school’s musical. I have a job over the summer as a day camp counselor, and my first year of that (summer after my freshman year) was unpaid, so I received a lot of volunteer hours. I also plan to get more volunteer hours before I apply to schools in the fall. I am very passionate about music and I also love kids. If I interview and explain my situation as well as write a good essay, can this school be a little more realistic for me?

I think it could definitely be a possibility for you, remain positive, show the progress you have made and continue to make. If you do the visit, make sure you sign up and they know you are there. Do the interview and be prepared with some questions for them. Show them your interest in the school by doing a little homework on them and having good questions for them. Best of luck to you!
