Chances at NCSSM?

Anyone know how tough it is to get in to North Carolina School of Science and Math? My S took SATs as a 7th grader as part of Duke TIP and scored 590CR, 670M, 670W (1930). Our local school has recommended we consider NCSSM. Does he have a reasonable chance? How good is the school and is it worth sending him 3 hours away? He's entering 9th grade this fall (small local private school).

If you search this board for NCSSM, you will find some discussion about it from current, entering and hopeful students. You can find the discussions and pm them if you don't get any feedback from your thread. I don't know if they are still looking at this forum.

Our S will be entering NCSSM this fall. Older S graduated in 2005. I think your son will definitely get in. Some students got in with SAT scores similar to your son's 7th grade scores; his 10th grade scores will no doubt be quite higher. Of course, a lot depends on which congressional district you are from.
NCSSM is a great place, but it's not for everyone. Our son thrived there, but of the 6 kids who went from his high school class, two did not make it to graduation.
You can PM me if you want more info.

I'm an incoming junior to NCSSM. (yay!)
well, first of all, SAT is NOT THAT IMPORTANT for admission to NCSSM.....i'd rather say the most important thing is Grades and da applicant's courseload.....at the same time the congressional thing goes hand in hand. Which CD is ur son from? A lot depends on it, coz people w/ even 1600-1800 SAT score can make it (if from a rural CD as opposed to someone say who's from Wake County w/ 2000 in SAT)
but it doesn't really mean evrything......all what REALLy matters is whether he really is interested in it---take him to one of the discovery days and stuffs and see his reaction. I know a lot of 'smart' students who ultimately decide NOT to go there only becoz they don't wanna leave w/o parents or that they wanna remain at the top of their class :)

anyway, PM me if u've any concerns of any kind.
