I know NYU and UNC are huge reaches ( NYU especially ) but do I have a shot? My essay is terrific, and I have some solid recommendations, especially from my counselor. My Freshman and Sophomore year was very difficult due to my parent's divorce, my dad's alcoholism and his recently diagnosed case of epilepsy which nearly killed him after having a seizure while driving drunk, on the highway. It's been rough, and my focus on school was non-existant at the time. My counselor made note of this in the recommendation, and while it may be a cheap way to gain sympathy ( even a futile one, at that ) I think they may possibly take that into consideration concerning my relatively low GPA.

Applied:
New York Univeristy ( huge reach )
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill ( reach )
Northeastern University ( match? )
Florida State University ( match? )
University of Alabama ( accepted!)
University of Central Florida ( accepted! )
University of South Florida ( accepted! )

Well...anyone?

northeastern is a definite match and so is fsu you have a good shot at both...nyu is a reach and unc if your OOS...

but congrats on making it into those schools! So jealous that you've already got acceptances haha. =P

I actually think you have a shot to get into NYU. Your SAT scores are in the range. Your GPA seems a little low unweighted, but I think you can make up for it with all the other stuff you've done.

You are definitely in at FSU. I think you might qualify for Honors there, depending on the GPA ( I'm not sure how they calculate it)

I'd say that you have a shot at UNC also, especially if you can raise your GPA.

Hope that helps. Good Luck!

Haha yeah, it's nice to have 3 solid schools out of the way.

I'm actually heavily leaning towards FSU, seeing how if I do get accepted, I would have a free ride thanks to bright futures. I'm just worried about my low gpa. My freshman and sophomore year was terrible; a couple of d's for semester grades. Do you think that'll hurt me significantly?

I suggest you contact Admissions at FSU and see if you may explain your circumstances as overcoming a significant obstacle. It's pretty late in the cycle, but it couldn't hurt.

You are in at Northeastern and Florida State. NYU is definitely a match. You are in at Chapel Hill if you are in state. If you are out of state, Chapel Hill may be a bit of a reach, but worth applying to. Your applications should stress your rising GPA trend.

Chick-Fil-A. noms If I give you a good chance, will you give me some free chicken? ;)

I think you’ve done well considering your situation, I would say that UNC is a very high reach and NYU is a low one. FSU is a definite match, spec. if you’re instate.

I say this because UNC caps their OOS acceptance at 12%, but I think you’re a good candidate! NYU is more likely to accept you 'cause of hardship. Chance me?

Oh my God. This was several years ago. Sorry, haha, whoops.
