Chances at Penn State University CS major

So I’m really interested into entering Penn State’s for my CS major but what worries me is if my grades will allow me to enter. As of now I hold a 3.3 weighted GPA, however, my grades in junior average to about 92%. I don’t know how much this will rise my GPA but I imagine not a lot. I do know my first few quarters of senior can possibly boost my GPA and plan to work hard to aim at a 95% average, in order to raise it hopefully. Anyways, despite my low GPA, my SAT is not as bad. My SAT was a 1400 out of the 1600 point scale. I went on prepscholar and it calculated a 53.3% chance of acceptance with my current GPA and SAT scores. I don’t trust the calculator though, and would like another’s opinion.

Come back and post again when you get your updated GPA. With a 3.3 weighted, I might consider applying for DUS instead of the College of Engineering. You would complete your recommended academic plan in DUS and apply for CS, probably during your 3rd or 4th semester, just like the students in the CoE.

The priority deadline is November 30th, so you might have at most one quarter of senior grades by then?

Thanks for the recommendation and reply :). I’m having trouble with online GPA calculators. Could you give me a rough estimate what my GPA would be with my 3.3 and my 92% avg. this junior year?

sorry, what does DUS stand for?

It’s impossible to tell without each individual grade – the main problem is that you can’t convert percentage directly to the 4.0 scale.

Now that I re-read your question, though, you say “currently” have a 3.3 – does that mean some of your junior year grades are factored in already? Like the 3.3 represents two years plus one semester? Or does it not include any of your junior grades at all?

The 3.3 GPA only represents my freshman and sophomore years. My junior year has not been calculated into my GPA yet.

That’d put your GPA to probably about 3.45. If weighted, it’d be too low for engineering (bottom admission range is 3.55 and that’s not for engineering.)
What classes have you taken junior year? Counting all 4 years how many honors +AP 's? What AP 's?
I second Bodangles : apply DUS and say you’re OK with summer session. You’ll be able to enroll in all your ‘entrance to major’ classes but it’s easier to GET IN if you apply DUS.
Also look into IST and the inter college data science majors.

DUS is the Division of Undergraduate Studies, which is their fancy name for “undecided majors.” It’s less competitive to get into than engineering.

So all my years freshman to junior I have only been in honor classes. I have taken 4 APs so far. AP world, AP psychology, AP English, APUSH. I got a 3 in my world and have not received my scores for the other APs but predict, 3 for APUSH, 4 for AP English and Psych. I will be in honor classes next year as a senior and will be taking AP calc, AP literature, and AP Physics-C. The only honor class I have not been in is Spanish and I dropped it in junior. I believe the reason for my bad GPA is because freshman through sophomore I remained at around 85%-90% in all my core classes, aside from being in high 70s and low 80s in SS, but in Spanish I did terrible getting 60%-70%.

The thing is that I’m not undecided about entering into CS. I would really like to jump in and learn as much as I can from the start, turning a new leaf in college. Even though it places me at a disadvantage I would like to apply for Coe, unless DUS will provide me the same opportunities as Coe. I know a 3 hour test can’t out weigh years of a GPA, but how much would I need to rise 1400 in order to compensate for my GPA?

It’s just your application classification. It doesn’t change what classes you’d take. It doesn’t change your opportunities.
Look at this:

If you’re DUS (expressing an interest in CS during orientation), you’d have these classes:
English => waived because of AP
CS 121
Math 140
First year seminar in Engineering and IST
a foreign language (if you didn’t like Spanish, you could pick Italian?)
an elective (behavioral science or art)
You’ll notice it’s the exact same as for first year COE, because even students who want COE as freshmen are not in COE till they’ve completed specific classes.

Like I said, you just follow your recommended academic plan for CS, but as a student in DUS. You apply for your major sophomore year just like everyone else. It just makes it easier to get into Penn State as a freshman. No other benefits or drawbacks.

Students who are “Smeal or bust” or “CoE or bust” may find themselves at a branch campus if their stats aren’t quite competitive enough. Or, if they’re also “UP or bust,” they might just be rejected.

Alright that sounds great! Looks like a plan for me. Thanks for the help and I hope I get accepted!

Good luck! Come back and update us when you get your junior year GPA.
