Chances at Penn

Hey all. I am very interested in University of Pennsylvania but I have many questions. How competitive is the Engineering School vs. the School of Arts and Sciences? Also, I want to be premed but I also really like physics. Is it possible for me to take classes in the Engineering School if I am enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences?

Lastly, the following are some of my basic scores, what are my chances of getting into UPenn's Engineering School? What about the School of Arts and Sciences?

ECs: I have been first chair alto saxophone in the jazz band, saxophone ensemble, and wind ensemble. It's rare for a freshman to make jazz band freshman year so that was an accomplishment.
I currently play all saxophones, and taught myself piano, clarinet, and the flute.
I was on varsity soccer (manager) for the past two years.
I run a music event called the Coffeehouse at my school, which is a pretty demanding position
I am a Campus Minister, which means that I am in charge of Community Service at my school. This year, our school has been close to 100% voluntary community service.
I have written music performed in concerts by the Saxophone Ensemble and am currently working on a piece for the Wind Ensemble.
I will be submitting a recording on the alto sax.
I'm probably forgetting something but to be honest I am vry involved and I think it will show in my application. (I'm not trying to brag, I just really want to know how real my chances are)

I am also thinking about applying to the following:
Penn
Columbia
Brown
Harvard (my #1 choice)
Georgetown
Boston College
Notre Dame

Tell what you think please

I forgot a lot of e.c. and awards and such.

Council of Seniors (student government)
Deanery Leader
Retreat Leader
Campus Ministry Award (Most Community Service in the School)
Benedictines of East Africa and Delbarton Students (Service Trip to Nairobi, Kenya)
SHAWCO Volunteer, Cape Town, South Africa
Appalachia Volunteer, Kentucky

Music:
NJPAC Jazz for Teens
William Paterson Jazz Summer Camp
Governor's School Alternate (I didn't get in but i took it as a compliment to come so close)
North Jersey Student Music Association North Jersey Region Band (First Chair)
Delbarton Arts Council Student Representative
Student Leader for Delbarton Music Ensembles

ok now i think i'm done :)

How competitive is the Engineering School vs. the School of Arts and Sciences?

The SAS is more competitive and has a much lower acceptance rate, however, the Engineering School applicant pool is very self-selective so it's really not all that easier to get into.

Is it possible for me to take classes in the Engineering School if I am enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences?

Yes. Penn has a 'One University' policy where you can take classes in any school at Penn (including the graduate schools), irrespective of the one you are enrolled in. Minors in other schools, and dual-degrees between schools are also possible. Look into the Liberal Studies and Technology program which you can apply to and earn degrees from both the Engineering School and the SAS. You can also apply for a dual-degree or transfer between schools at the end of your freshman and sophomore years but this depends on your GPA.

Also, I want to be premed but I also really like physics.

A lot of ppl premed from Engineering, but more so from SAS. It is generally harder to get a strong GPA from Engineering as opposed to SAS so that may affect your med-school chances.

Lastly, the following are some of my basic scores, what are my chances of getting into UPenn's Engineering School? What about the School of Arts and Sciences?

You have a decent, but not particularly great, shot at both. Apply to the one who's programs interest you more.

Penn - Reach
Columbia - Slight Reach
Brown - Slighter Reach
Harvard (my #1 choice) - Reach
Georgetown - Match
Boston College - Safety
Notre Dame - Match
