I know everyone asks this and there's no way to know for sure, but what do you think?

I'm a musician who has been recognized at the state level and I play in a prestigious youth orchestra. I sent in recordings of my playing with my applications. My recs were very good (my teachers told me) and I'm from Pennsylvania. I go to an inner-city school and am a student in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB classes are given the same weight as AP classes).

Your academic credentials are good, and your app will be strengthened if you have ECs other than music. I would say your chances are good, but then there really is no way to know until the letter comes in the mail. :)

Good luck!

JoBrahms,
Everything looks within the appropriate range. Have you heard the Pomona Orchestra? Our son was impressed when he visited. Thought he'd love working with the conductor. (have you met or written to him?) The music department people were extremely helpful through our son's visit and the ED admission process. I hope you have the same great experience and results.
Best of luck,
Pianomom

p.s. When our son saw the ensemble rosters, they looked as though the consortium could use more horn players. Just an observation for those who might be looking for a hook.

Who is the conductor? That's a good idea.

i'd say you have a decent chance of getting in. Your stats are good, and if you show your passion for music through your essays, i'd say you're in.

JoBrahms,
You should be able to find what you need here: Pomona College Orchestra

Wow, our stats are pretty similar...except for living on opposite ends of the country. :) What instrument do you play?
Anyway, best of luck, JoBrahms!

I play clarinet. What about you?

The conformist's instrument- violin. XD

Yay, and I play the flute...the girly-girl instrument? Even though you play the "conformist's instrument", minjiminji, you're still really good at it!

JoBrahms, I'd say that your stats look good and you seem like somebody who has a direction and a passion. Good luck!

I play French horn... hopefully other schools on my list will be needing some!

that is so cool!!
just asking, would it be too late to say, join to the orchestra or the band when i get to college? do they have these beginner classes, or do i have no hope?
thanks

I know nothing about Pomona specifically, but I am very familiar with classical music... Here's the thing: most students in a band will have been playing since 4th grade at varying levels of ability (also depends on which ensemble at which school). College orchestras are highly variable both in quality of players and conductor, however most will not want a beginner, especially on a wind instrument (an orchestra generally has 2-6 of each wind instrument, depending on the scale of the ensemble). You could definitely take private lessons and depending on the school and its music dep't, maybe join a lower level ensemble after a few months of instruction. People really underestimate the difficulty of musicianship; it takes a lot of work. I think it's awesome when people pick up instruments later on (haha, later being like 18!), but you have to be prepared to work hard. Practice is, in my opinion, 20x harder than any thesis or homework assignment, and often, equally, if not more, rewarding.
