Chances at Rice-Baylor 8 Year Medical Program

I already posted this in the chances section, but since I wasn't getting many responses, I figured I'd post it in the Rice section. I'm from Omaha, NE and go to the largest school in it.
Other Combined BA/MD Programs which offer medical school admission directly from high school:

Northwestern HPME
Brown PLME
Vanderbilt (Engage)
Virginia Commonwealth University
Fisk/Meharry
East Tennessee State University
University of Miami
RPI/Albany

Thanks for the list, pcheck1. I’m also very interested in a few of those as well. Any ideas on chances at any of them/all of them?

Hey Chemz,

I live in NE too (Elkhorn…but now Omaha = /)! You are doing great for a sophomore. I mean your PSAT is waaaay above NMF cutoff for the state so just replicate that score next year. You have a ton of awards for a sophomore too and I bet more will pour in next year.

Try applying for the Travis B. Lewis scholarship next year for UNMC…you get to do medical research and get 1,500 dollars for doing it. However, the program is notorious for accepting students who have connections to the school (ie parents are doctors there). I got denied from the program, but am doing more indepth and better paying research with a doctor there.

Ok, here is where I am to b a little bit more negative. You are an extraordinary student based upon what you have posted here. However, you have to be seriously unreal to get into the Rice/Baylor program. Most ppl who get it (from what I have seen), have won Intel STS and Siemens competitons (the most competitive science fairs in the US and the world even). Most have also dominated other national science based programs like USABO and even some science olympiads.

Look, I would take what I am saying with a grain of salt because I havent even been admitted to Rice yet. However, while I say that your chances of acceptance to Rice are good (I can’t strongly say you will make it in bc your only a sophomore and Junior year is critical), your chances of admittance to the Rice/Baylor program are probably below 5 percent.

There are many paths to med school, and quite a large percentage of the kids at Rice who go on to med school do so WITHOUT being in the Rice/Baylor program. Chance threads aren’t helpful, and chance threads for programs that are so small and selective as this one are even less helpful - but good luck for your Rice application, and hope you are successful applicant in 2011. :)

Rtgrove123,
I actually looked into the Travis B. Lewis Award (working with Dr. Gendelman), but in the end, decided I wouldn’t have enough time to do it. What is the time committment with the program and are there any other doctors to work with?

Also, my father did part of medical school at Baylor, when it was still split up, and I have a lot of family history in Texas. Does that help at all?

One last question: When talking about other programs, like Northwestern HPME and Brown PLME, are these the same types of kids applying - winners of Intel or Siemens, etc. ? I realize that the acceptance rates to med school even without the combined 8 year is still good, but I think it would be incredible to have the assurance off the bat.

yeah, the same kinda kids do apply. I wouldnt worry too much though. You have good stats and while it is insanely competitive, you have a good shot.

Just keep up the good work

I would say your family history in Texas won’t necessarily help you…Baylor University is different than Baylor College of Medicine so I don’t know if that would be a legacy status for you.

Regardless, once you get into Rice, the Baylor piece of it is very focused on who you are as a person. So, things like test scores, legacy status, etc. won’t really help you. For one, everyone has amazing test scores. Also, since only about 14 are selected for the program, there’s no way they’d accept a less-qualified legacy over a more-qualified non-legacy.

Bear in mind, though, that getting into this program is by no means impossible. I got in (granted, I was waitlisted originally, but got in) and I’ve NEVER participated in a science competition of any sort. In fact, I was always more into English and History…and I was very up-front about this with them, both in my essay(s) and in the actual interview. They’re not trying to churn out robots who have few other outside interests besides medicine and science. They want to see you have a human aspect to you. That, really, is what being a doctor is all about, and it’s not something they can really teach you in med school. in my opinion. I never thought in a million years I could possibly get R-B and literally cried when I got the phone call accepting me. haha. So it doesn’t hurt to dream.

AT THE SAME TIME.
Know that the process is insanely competitive and you have to 100% do everything you can to increase your chances. Put your best foot forward and know that that’s all you can really do. Remember to pursue outside interests. They make you interesting and give you depth. Do what you TRULY want to do, not because you think it’ll look good on the R-B app. Remember you have to get into Rice first, and test scores alone will not do it.

I didn’t even find out about R-B until October of my senior year. No joke. No one in FL knows about Rice, much less R-B. So don’t funnel your entire junior and senior years through the lens of R-B. There are a lot of paths out there and even if you end up not getting R-B, there are still many ways to go about becoming a doctor if that’s truly what you want for your life =]

good luck!
definitely ask me if you have any questions about the process.

Vanderbilt Engage is not offered anymore.
Also chance threads are quite pointless, especially because you are a sophomore.
Just note, that your interest is the same as 1,000 other kids in the nation. I have seen the stats of some of them who got accepted and they are quite intense.

good BS/MD programs are as hard as IVY.
retake SAT I,
CTY, TIP are not very impressive.
doctors maybe make less money in the furture, no kidding:(

Yeah, I know that CTY/TIP aren’t really impressive, but figured I’d put it down anyways. Also, I don’t want to be a doctor because of the money, seriously. And I don’t want to be a doctor for the “clout” or “prestige” or anything. I just want to do the best I can for society, and I think that medicine is one of those things that can do that. That’s why I want to be a doctor.

@College316, what exactly is the selection process to be accepted into R-B? Can anyone apply, or do you have to receive an application from the college? Also, how far into the program are you, and what are your impressions of it?

you need to apply to RB. It is an app independent of Rice…

So you can get RB and Rice or Just Rice or neither.

you apply to Rice either ED or RD…regardless of which one you choose, Baylor won’t see your Common App until the RD round to make sure everyone has a fair shot.

Baylor sees the Common App you submitted to Rice and also a separate Rice-Baylor app that is pretty lengthy but mainly essay-based.

They notify finalists in late March, and these students are invited to Houston to interview over Owl Days.

Of the finalists, 14 (or so) students are chosen. The rest are put on a waiting list in some undisclosed order. As people accept, slots fill up. As people choose to go to other schools, people on the waiting list get the opportunity to accept or not.

And I’m a Rice '13 so have not really experienced any of the program. haha. But I’ll let you know how it goes =]

Just know that it is an extremely bright students, students who have great personality and great academics.

“Just know that it is an extremely bright students”

what???

Bumpity bumpity bumpity bump bump.

Bump!!!

dude… your post is right on top. calm down.

BUMP = Bring Up My Post. Not let me keep posting in my own thread.

Be patient. being obnoxious isnt gonna help your case at all

When people have answers they will post them. Till then wait and BUMP if your post falls down to the bottom or next page.

There is one thing you need to know chemwz: our knowledge about your “chances” are truly no better than yours. I think that many people have gave you great information.

@Antarius:

“Just know that it is an extremely bright students”
what???

lol, Sorry I really need to proof read my posts, I meant to say: “Just know that there are many extremely bright students applying”.

haha

I wasnt sure what that meant. Was like ‘umm…’
