Chances at Ross (Business)

Hey, I'm an Asian female rising senior who goes to a highly competitive public school. I'd like to study economics/business in college, but with my stats, I'm a little doubtful about my chances. I want to apply to the Ross business school this fall, so please rate my chances on getting in (I'd be applying out of state, by the way.)

GPA: 3.65 UW, 4.43 W
Rank: School doesn't rank
SAT: 2030- 680 M, 610 V, 740 W (Retaking in October)
SAT II: None yet (Taking in November)

Freshman GPA: 3.64 UW, 4.36 W
Sophomore GPA: 3.71 UW, 4.71 W
Junior GPA: 3.43 UW, 4.43 W

As you can see, I improved from freshman to sophomore year, only to take 3 AP classes and 4 tough honors classes during my junior year to bring my GPA back down again. I attribute this to the fact that I took very hard classes during my junior year, yet the downfall is too evident to just blame it on my courses... I pretty much have no one but myself to blame. How badly will this hurt me?

Anyway, here are my EC's. My three main interests are soccer, french horn, and computers.

-Summer Research Intern at Georgetown
-Best Buy, computers department
-Private Tutor

-SGA Class Treasurer
-Mock Trial
-Business Club
-Freelance Music Club
-School Website Maintainer

-Girls' Varsity Soccer
-Co-Captain of Varsity Squad
-Club/Travel Soccer

-All County Symphonic Band, Principal
-All State Symphonic Band
-French Horn Teacher for beginners

-National Honor Society
-French National Honor Society
-Tri-M Music Honor Society

Thanks!

the problem with "ross chances" is that no one can get an accurate guage of anyone's chances b/c this is the first year they will have preferred admissions into ross. up until now you've always applied to ross using your credentials from the first two years at michigan.

Wait, I'm confused. Applying to Ross using credentials from the first two years at Michigan? I thought Ross had an undergrad business program too, like Stern or Wharton.

They do, but it used to be a 2 year program you applied to after your first two years in a regular undergrad college at umich (usually LS&A).

This is the first year you can directly apply to the B-school out of prep school.

Ohhh I see. Thanks for the clarification, Maize.

Isn't the freshman Ross class going to be really small, like 50 students? If that's the case, then it's like Harvard admissions--merely a lottery, as no one can say they have a near-definite chance.

That's correct Matthew, getting accepted into the Ross school straight out of high school is going to be tough. I would be surprised if they admitted any student with sub 1400 on the SAT/32 on the ACT.

Kersplunk, Michigan will be a match/reach for you if you apply to LSA. Given the limited number of spots availlable at Ross, I would recommend against applying directly to Ross. Your Michigan GPA is roughly 3.55 (Michigan does not look at Freshman grades and only considers unweighed GPA) and your SAT score is 1290 (Michigan will not look at the W section of the SAT next year). The Michigan mean for out-of-staters is more like 3.8 and well over 1300 on the SAT (M & V only).

I re-calculated my GPA for Michigan, and it came out to be 3.57 UW (meh) just from my sophomore and junior years. And yeah, right now my SAT score is 1290. Hopefully I can pull both of my math and verbal scores into the 700 range when I retake it this fall.

Thanks for all the info!

How easy will it be to transfer into the Ross School of Business?

Not easy. If you are a student at Michigan, you have to maintain a 3.5+ GPA to have a reasonable chance of getting in. If you are a student at another university, you will have to compete with hundreds of applicants for just 15 spots.

Bit of a misnomer, really--all those freshmen will be LSA freshmen. They will not be Ross students for another year. However, if they still want to be Ross students, and haven't done something egregious their freshmen year, they will be able to enter Ross without a second application and without competing with the others who are trying to get in.

It's a placeholder these unique students are being offered--not a spot in a special freshman class of Ross students.

Supposedly, there is no cap on the preferred admissions.

if only they had implemented the preferred admissions process for ross a year earlier...
