Chances at Some Colleges + Where Else Should I Apply?

I posted this in College Search hoping for suggestions but it seemed like I was on the right track:

"Hello all,

Senior Year Schedule:

* AP Spanish Language
* AP English Literature and Composition

I will be taking the AP exams for all of the courses.

As with most, I picked reaches, matches, and safeties (sort of).

Here are my (tentative) picks:

Reaches: Stanford, Princeton, Harvard

Matches: NYU, BU, USC

Safeties: I would say my safeties are Rutgers, UMiami, and Fordham, but these are the most fluid.

Here's where things get trickier. I have my sights set on the National Merit Scholarship, but the cutoff in NJ has wavered between 221 & 223 the past few years. Assuming I do get it, I would look at the schools that recruit and give aid to NMS qualifiers.

However, these picks were based off of the overwhelming encouragement I've gotten from teachers, family, counselors, and classmates. After just a few hours on this site, I've learned to temper those expectations.

I was hoping that you could give me the hard truth I need instead of feeding me candy-coated nonsense that I want to hear. What schools should I be looking at? I have toured USC, Stanford, UCLA, Cal-Berkeley, Princeton, NYU, BU, BC, Harvard, and Yale. I plan on touring or attending information sessions for Penn and Columbia. I have received information from dozens of universities and am feeling a lot of pressure over my application decisions.

I can supply any additional information you ask for within reason, and may add some as I remember it. Feel free to also suggest any things I can do in the next year to boost my application. I'm considering taking piano lessons (I play recreationally)."

Basically I'm looking for an honest, straight-talk answer as to my chances at:

Stanford, the Ivies, Duke, Georgetown, USC, NYU, BU, UChicago, UCLA, Cal-Berkeley & Northwestern

In addition, I'd like any suggestions you have for other colleges. Rest assured that these are not the only schools I am considering — I just feel that these are good match to reach schools for me.

Stanford: Reach
Duke: Reach
Princeton: Reach
USC: Match
NYU: Match
BU: Low match
U Chicago: Reach (can you write stellar essays?)
NWU: High match
Georgetown: High match
UCLA: Match
Berkeley: Match
Rutgers: Safety (other than 0-6 PharmD)
Rutgers 0-6 PharmD: Match

Awesome, about what I expected. As far as stellar essays go, I consider myself a more-than-able writer, with one condition — I generally suffer on standardized essays because I have a very deliberate handwriting style. I often have to sacrifice substance for time. I did hear that about Chicago though, so it’s not unexpected.

As far as Rutgers 0-6, I’m not really interested in sciences or mathematics. I find them cold. I’ll probably wind up majoring in Law, PoliSci, or Econ.

You are really well prepared and well informed. You should definitely try some of those reach schools. I think even U Chicago could be a high match for you. Good luck to your school applications.
As for the National Merit, the cutoff for commended this year is 203 this year. So the state cut off for semifinalist may be on the high side for most states this year.

Thanks for the information regarding NMF. I have to say I’ll be disappointed if I just miss the cut-off. I had one answer where I simply filled the wrong bubble, and another where I mixed up x and y on a simple algebra question. C’est la vie, I suppose.

Don’t worry too much. You never know the NJ cutoff until September.
