Put these colleges as safety/match/reach for me

hi sophomore here. i currently have a 2.9 GPA nearing the end of my school year. i havent tried until this current MP and i have straight As. I realized college is right around teh corner and kicked it into gear.

My school is top 10 instate NJ, and we have very good records with a lot of state schools like PSU, Maryland, of course rutgers, and privates like Miami, Syracuse, and GWU.

Major depending on school would be either Business/Marketing, Communications, or possibly Sports Management.

Are these in the right category? I realize i may be a bit low on safetys: if so, suggest some for me please!!!

My dream is to go to one of these big universities( I DO NOT WANT LACS!!!):
safetys:
rutgers
arizona

Matches?:
Maryland-Main-favorite
UDEL
Miami-favorite
UIUC
Penn State-Main-favorite
Tulane-favorite
Uconn
BU
Northeastern
Syracuse-favorite
CU Boulder
IU:B
GWU

reach?
Michigan

Hyper reaches:
any UC
USC

I would likely apply EA to the favorites, possibly ED to maryland or Miami
I'm from NJ and i hope to raise my GPA to at lease about 3.2 by the end of my junior year.

My SATs will be very good. I got a 210 on PSAT, so expecting about a 2100.

ECS: 4 years rec basketball. 3 years camp counselor. 2 Years Deca. Job as Assistant at local Real Estate firm. Part of Big Brother program during Junior year.

MY GPA is low due to A D+ and A C- Year grades for Physics and Algebra 2 respectively. If I were to retake Algebra 2 (D+) would the grade i get retaking it replace the D+?

Rutgers- No idea about this school.

arizona - you will get into both ASU and UofA easily

maryland-i live in md and i really doubt you will be accepted, even with a 2100, I have friends with stright A’s who did not get in, UMD is becomming one of the best state universities around, you should apply but I doubt it.

UDEL- Yea from what i hear you should get in here, if you make a 2100

Miami- I’m sorry but i HIGHLY doubt you will get in here, Its really hard. YOu should try and find connections.

UIUC- no clue

Penn State- Yes you should get in if you have that 2100, because penn state loves out of staters who pay 30000 a year.

Tulane- is very weird about accepting people, give it a shot, idk.

Uconn- i think ud get in

BU- No way

Northeastern- Probably not

Syracuse- probably not

CU Boulder- not sure but i think youd get in

IU:B- donno

GWU- Probably not, unless your not white.

Michigan- the good news is a friend of mine told me they don’t even look at freshman year, so if you make stright a’s in sophomore year, you are probably good

any UC
USC- probably not

some good back ups for you might be ASU, UofA, Alabama (you might get money there), LSU, or idk.

I don’t think you can apply early decision to maryland. (BTW college park md, is a nasty town)

As of the moment, UConn is a reach.

I don’t mean to discourage you, but you might not have an accurate idea of your SAT score from your PSATs. I scored a 1990 on my PSAT this year and when I took the SAT in March, my scores went down to an 1810. I took a PSAT/SAT class in school first semester, but other than that I did no preparation. Don’t just assume you’ll get the same score as your PSATs because the SATs are a totally different test. This situation may not happen to you, I’m just warning you.

If you pull up your GPA to 3.3 cumulative and do well on the SATs, then you will have a decent chance at most of these schools. Having an upward trend will also certainly help. However, I don’t see how you list mega-reaches as all UCs and Michigan as a reach when Michigan is more prestigious in my opinion than at least half of the UCs.

a lot of people improve their PSAT to SAT though so do not be discouraged, just study up! especially if that PSAT was the one you take freshman year you will improve it

A few of those matches are reaches unless you improve your GPA.

I plan on taking SAT Prep course during The fall of my junior year and then getting a Tutor to review material.

what school in nj if i can ask? basically those are all reaches(no shot at michigan). But, you’ll prob get into the arizona ones. Rutgers is not a safety for you just because its in-state.

Honestly, don’t waste your money applying to all those schools. Realistically you’ll get into arizona and delaware as a safety, penn state being a slight reach

northern highlands. number 8 in the state.

mY freshman GPA is 2.8. My soph GPA will be about 3.0 or 3.1. I hope to be getting a 3.7+ for my junior year.

eromano: I glanced at the links you posted on another page…given those stats of kids from your school and where they have been accepted, it may be advisable to apply to Syracuse ED if it’s one of your first choices; looks like someone with your stats was admitted ED this year…

The large publics will be VERY stats driven…GPA will definitely be an issue, but not out of the question with a high SAT…but I wouldn’t count on any of them as a safety in this environment…add Towson, and definitely ASU, but I think that Arizona should be fine…

its going to be very hard for you to getinto a majority of these schools sorry

community college?

You have no safeties. Bring up your GPA.

My son had a slighty higher average (UW) and lower SATs (1290/1860). He did show an upward trend in his grades (which schools like to see). He goes to a very competetive and highly ranked public high school in NYC (which I think some colleges do factor in, but definitely not all).

He applied to some of the same schools you’re talking about, for the school of arts & sciences. If you apply for business it could be tougher. His results were:
UConn - accepted
UDel - accepted (they actually ask on the application to explain any grade < B on your transcript)
Syracuse - accepted (he had interviewed. the rep told him he was borderline, but because he had showed steady improvement and had a tough senior schedule he still had a shot).
Penn State UP - denied (this hurt)

You might want to consider adding UMass to your list.

I am not a community college level student. the poster who posted that is out of his mind.

^^^i wonder where you got that #8 in the state ranking from. Seems like your h.s isn’t anything special, if any, below average. How many kids are in a class?

rated number 8 by US news i believe… Where would you even get anything to make you think its otherwise?

also here is a link to NJ monthly’s ratings.<a href=“Top New Jersey high school rankings | www.njmonthly.com”>Top New Jersey high school rankings | www.njmonthly.com;

335 kids in my class

bump to the top

those rankings are a joke besides the top 7. I looked at your school’s naviance. And for a “top school” in nj, you had a minimal amount of students go to great schools. A minimal amount got into ivy league.

You have been lazy so far. Until we see how dedicated you are to achieving better grades, we can’t tell what would be a safety vs. meet vs. reach.
