Chances at some Ivies + UC + NW & others?

I'm wondering whether you guys could chance me (I like vicissitudes' percentages, those are pretty cool.) I don't appreciate people being overly harsh or rude - please be honest and constructive.

Anyways, here goes:

Unweighted GPA: 3.9
Weighted: 5.14
Top 10% of school
Very difficult courseload

9th - All honors
10th - 2 APs, 5 honors
11th - 5 APs, 2 honors
12th - most likely, 6 APs, 1 honors

I got a 5 on my US exam, but a passing score on another exam (which was because there was no review in class - at all!). I'm taking 5 more in May, and I'm pretty sure I'll get at least 4s & 5s on all of them. I'm also taking 3 subject tests in June (Math II, Literature, Biology E/MC).

PSAT: 199
Practice ACT: 29

I'm taking the SAT in March, so I'll have a better idea by then.

I'm a little uncomfortable posting all my extracurricular activities and such, but I've got a unique & interesting list (if anyone would like my full list, tell me if it's okay to PM you!). There's nothing on there that's 'ordinary' or 'average' - except maybe NHS. Yeah, that might be. But everything else is interesting :]

No national awards or whatnot, but I'm talented artistically [and it's clear it's my passion through extracurricular activities] and can write exceptionally well. I know it's a little vague, but I would like it if you guys posted here and said if it was okay to PM the rest of it :)

OK, on to my prospective list:

Univ. of Illinois at Chicago
Univ. of Urbana-Champaign
Loyola University
Univ. of Chicago
Northwestern University
Georgetown University
Brown University
Yale University
Princeton University

I got some e-mail & snail mail from Yale, and I had never considered them before (since I think they are out of my league), but it was through some minority recruitment program [I thought they had sent it to me by mistake].. so now I'm a little interested in Yale, too, though I know by no means does that letter mean anything, haha.

Also, yes, I know Princeton is out of my league, but any help on what I can do to increase my chances would be helpful and appreciated. And while this isn't on my list, chances at Harvard would be nice? Even though I know it's a reach for everyone..

And a special request.. could you guys recommend universities to me? I'm a kid that loves challenges, debates, nerdy communities. I was into MIT until I realized I suck at math too much to go there (taking BC Calc this year, though!)

So yes.. post away? Please? :)

I'm confused, are you a URM. Also, are you just top 10% or higher as your GPA would imply. Class rank?

I'm Southeast Asian, but .. I don't know why I got that mail about minority recruitment. That was certainly odd. Well, our school only does percentiles, so even if I was somehow in the top 5 students, there's no way of knowing (though I think I'm probably way up there, somewhere). We don't have class rank.

Hope that clears things up. I would like more replies, please!

Sorry for bumping this again. Anyone have any other thoughts?

Assuming your ec's are as good as you say they are, I think most are still reaches unless you can break the 2100/30 mark. If you can do that, then.

Univ. of Illinois at Chicago - Safe Match
Univ. of Urbana-Champaign - Safe Match
Loyola University - Safety
Univ. of Chicago - Slight Reach
Northwestern University - Slight Reach
Georgetown University - Reach
Brown University - Reach
Yale University - Big Reach
Princeton University - Big Reach

Unless your test scores are exceptionally higher (2250+) I don't seen Yale or Princeton as realistic, but still possible.

Again, the ambuiguity of your EC's make it difficult. But the better they are, the better your chances are.

Univ. of Illinois at Chicago - remove from your list
Univ. of Urbana-Champaign - leave as safety (and financial safety in-state)
Loyola University - remove from your list
Univ. of Chicago - decent chance
Northwestern University-decent chance
Georgetown University-decenty chance
Brown University- OK chance
Yale University-slim chance
Princeton University-slim chance

Add some "mid-range" top 25 schools to your list, e.g.
WUSTL, Vanderbilt, U Michigan, Emory.

@ Xeneise:

I'm planning to get a 32 on my ACT and a 2150 on my SAT. Though I'd have to work incredibly hard to get a 2250..

My counselor says that he has full confidence I can improve on my test scores, so I'm not worried about that.. but still. It's a little nervewracking.

Well, I'm relieved to hear that Northwestern and Univ. of Chicago are good matches for me, because they're my hometown big universities :)

Do you think it helps a bit that I have a few leadership positions? Again, I don't want to be too explicit here because I'm uncomfortable, but I have a leadership role in two of my ECs.

@ datadriven:

Any reason why I should remove Univ. of Illinois at Chicago & Loyola? Most students here place that on their list because if they don't get into any of their dream schools, that's where they would go. I also put Loyola University down because a relative of mine goes there, but the tuition is a lot & financial aid is horrible.

I've heard of all of those schools.. do you think I have a good chance at them? Though I'm not sure about WUSTL. My friend tells me that their tuition is expensive and once again, financial aid sucks.

So anymore replies?

Yes leadership roles would help, and I still think my estimates will remain the same if you get those scores. You should be in at least one or the other, meaning northwestern or chicago.

Thank you, very much! I thought that I might have a good chance at U of C, and I'm going to work really hard on my application in the fall for that.

Do you think there any specific summer programs that might also help? I did the Young Scholars Program for U of C, and was invited for the EPGY at Stanford but the parents were unhappy about it.

I'm thinking of doing MITES or WTP at MIT (though the deadline is quickly approaching). My parents think that taking a college class at U of C or Northwestern over the summer would be a good way to spend my summer.

Any suggestions?

Bump. Anyone else have any other opinions?

murkywater, the reason I suggested to remove Loyola and DePaul out of your list is because these are "regional" schools with no national reputation. You look like a strong enough candidate for UIUC which is a lot better school than those 2. You can also add UIndiana and UWisconsin to the list as safeties/matches.

@ datadriven

Thanks! I didn't realize that UIC wasn't a regional school, but thanks for the information. I'll definitely add those to my list.

Question: Should I add University of Michigan?

Univ. of Illinois at Chicago: safety
Univ. of Urbana-Champaign: safe match
Loyola University: safety
Univ. of Chicago: good chance
Northwestern University: good chance
Georgetown University: good chance
Brown/Yale/Princeton: you have a chance [I try to refrain from giving definite chances on the Ivies]

Univ. of Illinois at Chicago-safety
Univ. of Urbana-Champaign-safe
Loyola University-safety
Univ. of Chicago-decent
Northwestern University-reach
Georgetown University-reach
Brown University-reach
Yale University-big reach
Princeton University-big reach

u really need to post ur stats
