since he is hispanic AA unfortunately secures him a position at Stanford

^sigh I doubt anyone gets the wave through Stanford admissions.

His grades are good (even with the low math grades), his test scores are great. His extracurriculars look a little thin, and by thin I mean random, so I guess that’s a negative. Great essays will be an excellent addition to this application, esp. for Stanford. And, yes, his URM status will help him (not secure him a spot at top schools like these, but they will undoubtedly help)

Stanford - low reach
UCLA - match
Berkeley - high match

you should apply to hypm also since you’re URM.

Stanford-reach
UCLA-match
UC Berkely-high match

Your friend could talk about his low GPA in his essays and explain WHY he had gotten the C’s (maybe family circumstances?) because it just seems weird for him to have low GPA and high test scores. I suggest that he volunteer doing something that he enjoys so that he can write about it in his essays or help out at a place he already had before. Tutoring isn’t a bad idea. As long as he has time, he should do something over the summer (if he isn’t already).

lol no , he’s just a slacker. thanks for the advice htough

I think he would be well served doing some more volunteer work. A lot of other applicants have it, it shows that they are involved in the community and will be involved in college. He still has almost a half a year so that might be a good goal to work on. Otherwise, match besides Stanford.
