I have a 3.3 gpa and a 1400 on the SAT. My gpa is so low because of a sophomore slump when a lot happened outside of school. These are the schools I’m applying to in the fall for Chemical engineering.
Penn State
Drexel
University of Delaware
University of Rhode Island
Michigan State
West Virginia
Also, if possible, recommend any other schools that you feel I could get into for Chemical engineering. Thank you.
Your SAT score is great! It’s way above average for most universities, including the ones you listed. However, your GPA isn’t great… Because your GPA dropped in sophomore year, you had (and have…) the opportunity to show an upward trend! If you indeed show(ed) an upward trend, that GPA drop isn’t going to kill your chances. Admissions officers love seeing improvement over the years, and that’s exactly what you are able to show! Now, I’d recommend working on your ECs (if you haven’t already).
Hopefully this could have been of any help. Good luck with your application(s)!
@Tomas1355 thank you so much- and yes, I have improved greatly with my junior year grades. Also I do have a ton of ECs
Considering the average GPA’s for these schools unweighted are about 3.6, it’s a serious reach GPA wise. Those SAT scores are nice! Those are like 80th or 85th percentile scores, if you have the essays to back up your passion for learning and the EC’s to compete with other students, I’d say absolutely go for it! Remember also, there is early decision if you find that school you absolutely know you want to go to and will boost your chances. Good luck!
@duke1021 could you rank these schools from reach, match to safety for me using my stats?
There’s a lot of information missing from your stats. Did you take mostly grade-level classes, or honors and AP? Do you have any ECs? Where do you live?
Assuming you took some honors/AP courses, these are what I’d chance you at. (If you didn’t take any honors and AP, a 3.3 GPA really hurts you.)
Penn State: reach if you’re OOS and want to get into University Park. Match if you’re in-state
Drexel: match bc of your SAT scores
Delaware: match-ish, but not a lock
URI: Definite match. I’d be shocked if you didn’t get in
Michigan State: depends on when you apply. MSU is rolling admissions, so the earlier you apply the better chance you have of getting in.
WV: that’s nearly for sure you’d get in. unless you have a secret criminal record, you’ll get in.
A engineering school that comes to mind is Clarkson. It’s in the middle of nowhere NY, but if you don’t mind that I think you’d probably get in. If I remember correctly, the application is free. Not sure about that though.
@thalaya yeah all my classes are honors, I took AP World, AP micro and macroeconomics this past year. I do have a bunch of ECs, like track and field, key club, ETC. Also I live in PA. Thank you so so much for your input and for recommending Clarkson!
@thalaya also my friend has a 3.2 and a 1320 on the SAT, do you think he’ll get into Drexel?
Add Pitt and Temple since you live in PA.
UDel chemical engineering is top 5 in the country because of DuPont, so consider it a reach.
WVU is a safe bet and they give good financial aid to PA residents.
If you like the co op system at Drexel apply to UCincinnati: pioneered the co op system, highly respected, and less expensive than Drexel. Drexel has lousy financial aid sobthst the challenge isn’t getting in but rather paying for it.
Michigan state is an academic match but is unlikely to be affordable. Look into Michigan Tech.
I would add Clarkson, Union, WPI, Trinity College, and Wentworth because they do holistic admissions so they’ll take a recommendation from your GC explaining what happened sophomore year. They offer very good financial aid. (Trinity and Union are reaches).
@MYOS1634 thank you so much! And I was considering pitt a while back but their GPA average is extremely high, and chemical engineering is even higher
To increase your odds at Penn state, you can apply in September, apply DUS and indicate you’re willing to go summer session. You will take the engineering freshman seminar and all the entrance to major classes and will have to make the same benchmarks as those directly admitted to Engineering.
@MYOS1634 thank you for your guidance! My friend has a 3.2 gpa and a 1320 on the SAT, will he get into Drexel?
The issue with Drexel isn’t getting in but paying for it because their financial aid is terrible .
