Part of the requirements for my school are the reasoning for some of the questionable scheduling. In my school system, you are allowed to take a few high school classes while you're still in middle school. The two semesters of band that I took my freshman year were due to the requirements of the Band program at my school. The reason I have two English classes my Junior year is due to a requirement of 5 English classes for the Advanced Diploma. I am part of a program at my school that grants an Associate's Degree in General Studies at the end of your Senior year if you follow a set schedule and manage to obtain your necessary 60 credits. Because of the weighting of AP classes, I was able to pull up the B's I had my sophomore year and bring my GPA back to a 4.0.

I'm only a Junior now, but I'm dedicated and I know I'll at least make A's in the AP/DE classes I have next year. So try to look at them as if I'll have made A's. I think I'll hold my 4.0 if not increase it given the rigor of the classes.

As far as AP exams are concerned, I've only taken one. I got a 3 on the AP European exam. But I've worked my hind off in AP Psychology, AP Language and AP US History. My Psychology teacher is incredible and averages around 10 5's a year, along with a smattering of 4's. She thinks that given the material I know, I should be fairly set for a 5. My US teacher has been teaching for around 40 years now and thinks I'm pretty set for a 4. Same for my English teacher. So I know that I'll at least qualify, although it may not be exactly a top score.

Extra curriculars:
Drum Major for the 7 time state champion marching band (11th, 12th)
Beta Club member (10th, 11th, 12th)
NHS member (11th, 12th)
Interact Club member (10th, 11th, 12th)
"Member of the Board" on the local youth anti-drug coalition (11th, 12th)
Board member for the Superintendent's Youth Board (11th)
Peer counselor (10th, 11th, 12th)

So given these credentials, what do you think my chances are at these colleges:

Public:
University of Virginia (I live in Virginia)
University of North Carolina
University of Michigan
The College of William and Mary

Private:
Wake Forest University

Basically, my dream school is Virginia. If I were to get into all of the above, UVA would be my choice. My financial background doesn't help me much in the way of financial aid, so paying a lot for college isn't really in the book for me. I mostly have someone pushing me to apply to these other schools as well. I have other safety schools in the state planned (VCU, JMU, Virginia Tech). Plus, I know that UVA will accept nearly all of my Dual Enrollment credit due to agreements between the Virginia Community Colleges and state universities. The same can be said with William and Mary.

Also, I don't know if this means anything or not, but my high school has been ranked as a silver level school by U.S. News.

So what do you guys think?

uva high match
unc high match
um match
william and mary match
wake forest high match

BTW, my SAT score is an 1830. 600’s on Math and Writing, 630 on critical reading.

Also, I was on the History Scholastic Bowl team for my Sophomore and Junior years.

UVA - between match and high match
UNC - reach ( I live in NC and trust me, it’s so hard to get in OOS)
U Mich - probably match
W&M - match
Wake Forest - you’re in ( It’s like 77% OOS)

I don’t know if this changes anything either, but the county where I live is the most poverty stricken part of VA. The city that’s inside of our county (that’s maybe 15 minutes from where I live) was recently ranked the 7th poorest city in America.

If you can get your sat scores up, you’d be good to go.
UVA- match/high match
UNC- Low
UMich - Match
W&M- High match
Wake- high match

UVA- Match/High Match
UNC- Low/Reach (very competitive to get in)
UMich- Match
W&M-Match
Wake- Match

If you raise your SAT scores up more you would have a better chance at UNC. However, where ever you go I’m sure you will do exceptionally well.

@Teenie18 That’s kinda what I thought about UNC. Those SAT scores are a year old though. I’m retaking in May/June and I think I’ll at least increase the Writing score (which is, of course, the one that is least cared about).

But yeah. UVA and UNC both are extremely hard to get into out of state. And thanks so much! That was kind of you to say.

@JuniorBengal You are very welcome!

It seems your school has grade inflation. Your SAT at 1830 is way too low for schools like UVA, UNC, and UMich. You should look up the admission stat of each school. FYI, UMich’s mid 50 SAT was 2030-2250 last year.

If you can improve your SAT, you’ll have a very good chance at all of these institutions. But currently, they’re all looking like waitlists/rejections. If you can get it up to 2100, you’ll have a very fair chance at W&M, UVA, and Wake Forest. Chapel Hill, as others have said, is brutal OOS, and UMich isn’t the nicest either.

Predict back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1628065-the-ultimate-chancing-thread-with-real-life-incentive-p1.html</a>

I have a few friends that are in Northern Virginia which is the most competitive area in the state. UVA is getting increasingly more difficult to get into to. The SAT score will kill you. One of my friends who is a junior knew a senior that was rejected flat-out with a 4.4 GPA 4.0 (UW). A plethora of AP’s and some extracurricular. He was not accepted, because (general consensus among peers) he did not have strong EC’s. I highly recommend you retake SAT to get into the UVA mid percentiles. If you can get two of the subjects on the SAT to above 700 you will have a very very high chance of getting in. From what I hear Band is a pretty big deal there as well. Also take some subject tests like one or two (Math 2 is easiest to get 800 (high error margin)).

Wake Forest is a very good match because they don’t look at Standardized Testing and the remainder of your academic resume seems good. AP tests you should consider not reporting the (3) but completely your choice.

Best of Luck!

I’m really confused. How do you get a 106% in APUSH, but an 1830 on the SAT? In order to do well in that class, your critical reading and writing skills have to be really good!

@longsock, the SAT scores is nearly a year old and was actually an awful day for me. I could’ve and should’ve done much better. I actually had a meltdown on the morning of the test bc of other personal problems. Long story.

@billcsho Not quite inflation. My school is on the University scale. Instead of just making an A in an AP class count for 5 points instead of 4 into your GPA, they add 7 points to the grade and then make those count 5 points to the GPA. It makes little to no sense.

@nhdmaniac Kind of what I was thinking. I personally think I can get the SAT score up to at least 2000. I know someone who got into UVA, UMich and W&M with a 2050. That was only a few years ago, too.

I went through just now and figured out what my GPA is unweighted. Unweighted, it’s a 3.92. Weighted, it’s a 4.0. The maximum I can pull it up to is a 3.94 unweighted and 4.12 weighted.
