Chance Me Instate for Virginia Schools!!

Hi guys! I was wondering if anyone could give me a general idea on where I stand for some of the colleges I'm applying to.

Stats:
SAT I: 1320(CR+M)/ 1930(720CR/ 610W 10E/ 600M) I just took the October SAT and my scores should be higher
SAT II: None (will most likely take in November)
AP: 5 APUSH, 4Bio, 3WH; currently enrolled in Lit, Calc AB, French, US & Comp Gov
GPA: 3.99 weighted, I'll explain later why it's so low
Class Rank: 15-20%

Senior Course Load
Personal Finance/Econ
AP AB Calc
Independent Science Research(year long science research project)
AP Comp Gov
AP French
AP Lit
Physics

EC:
DECA: 4 years, runner up twice at the state competition, attended ICDC twice
Cross Country: 3 years, finished second in region/ 5th in the state, Captain
Track: 3 years, Captain
Volunteering for our school: 100+ hours
Paid Internship: Dentist office, learned basics of dentistry/Finance and business background
Environmental Club: Founder/President
Model UN
Scuba Diving: Did a conservation trip in the caymans for the removal of lion fish

If you could chance me for these schools that would be fantastic
UVA(#1)
William and Mary: legacy (if that helps?)
VTech

Essays and other stuff
My essays and recommenders should be fantastic, I've had great relationships with my teachers and coaches and all of that should be reflected well in the letters. As for essays, I've worked really hard on them and I feel they should be really strong.

As for GPA, the reason it's so low is that I didn't really understand the consequences of taking high school courses in middle school. I got B's in them and thought nothing of it. Little did I know that it would cause me so much extra work to even attempt to salvage my GPA. I've also had an upward trend if that means anything( 4.00, 4.22, 4.24)

Thanks in Advance!

Thanks so much! I have a college visit from w&m tomorrow and will ask about the ED program!

Bump

How was your visit? I am current student here at W&M so I’d be happy to answer any question that admissions may have not, in particular anything about extracurriculars or things from a student perspective. The student environmental club and international relations club all have a big presence here, which seems to be in line with what you are looking for. They are not going to look too critically at grades you got before freshman year tbh, they are much more concerned about how you ended up doing at the end of your high school career.

Since every school weights differently, I cannot really comment on that, but in general upward trends are good. Do you know your unweighted grades? Essays are quite important to them, which I thought were what got me in. Legacy does help, but not to the extent that it may be weighted at other schools. William and Mary does take intense pride in it’s alumnis and homecoming weekend was such a blast last week seeing all the cool things people have gone off to do.

While I can’t speak for all the schools, I think you have a decent shot, even if some are nearing reaches, for all of them. You are instate which will help and will increase your chances. In the next few months, just make sure you have everything you want them to see. Your top notch essays, good letters of rec, possibly some improvements on standardized test scores, and finishing off the first semester of senior year strong. Your cross country record is quite impressive btw, and you could definitely run for the team!

UVA takes the writing section seriously, they required it back when it was only an SAT subject test. W&M on the other hand only looks at CR+M/1600.

Numbers aren’t everything. But they are the first thing.

Classes taken in middle school do not count as part of your HS gpa, they will not be included on your HS transcripts. You’ll simply have taken more advanced classes in HS. That’s course rigor, that’s good. The AP-heavy senior course load will help, too. You should calculate your HS gpa using only those classes you actually took in 9th-12th grades, both weighted and unweighted.

3.99W/1930 is pretty iffy for UVA. Some get accepted with those numbers, but it’s basically midrange of the rejected IS applicants. If there is any way you could bring your unweighted (raw) gpa up to 3.8+, that would help you a great deal. The upward trend will be recognized and will help your prospects in any case. UVA places more weight on your HS transcripts than anything else, test scores are basically to augment, confirm, or undermine what your transcripts show them. I don’t think applying is a waste of money, but don’t rely on them.

3.99W/1320 is better for W&M, because your CR is so much higher than your W. W&M also considers grades and test scores more nearly equally (but not completely) than UVA does. That’s right about at the cusp of being able to say you’ll probably get in if the rest of your record is the usual. I’d say that if you know you could be happy there, and IS tuition is reasonably affordable even without aid, ED might be a great choice for your W&M application.

Is there a very large difference in your interest between UVA and W&M? If so, you may want to avoid any binding applications.

VT, I’d say you were in, EXCEPT your 600 M is your lowest test score, and the most important part of the test for them. VT is very much engineering-focused, but even non-engineering they are relatively light on the humanities and social sciences. So you are unlikely to be admitted to VT engineering, but otherwise would probably get in (and almost certainly if you apply non-engineering ED). Do you have an intended major at this point?

Note that if you choose to apply ED to either of W&M or VT (and you can do so to only one of them), the deadline is Nov. 1 - next Saturday. (UVA’s EA is non-binding, of course, and can be combined with any other EA application and an ED application if you want.)

Hi thanks for replying, I do truly love william and Mary, it really is a great school. At this point I don’t really have any questions about the school, the admissions officer really did a great job. Again thanks so much for replying!

Thank you for replying! Let’s see as of now I should probably end with my mid year grades around 4.5 ish, I really don’t know my unweighted GPA. As for SAT’s I should be somewhere in the 2000’s. As for w&m and uva, I really like both schools, although I think the only reason why I like uva more is because of the slightly larger school size. As for intended major I’ll probably be a bio major, I really have no intention of being an engineering major if that helps. Finally grade wise, the minor blemish I have on my transcript are two b+'s, other than that it’s been all A’s. Thanks again for replying and hopefully this adds some prospective

Also GPA minus middle school should be around 4.18 ish

***and I’d like to do a bio/business double major

If you did high school courses in muddle school, they will be on your high school transcript because you received high school credit. That said, I don’t think those grades will hurt you. Admissions is more interested in the later years of high school.
