Chances at Tulane and Cornell?

I am about to finish my Junior year, and am very anxious, (and extremely nervous), to see which college I will end up attending. I am a Florida Resident, and am of South American descent, (first generation American), and I am captain of the swim team in my not so well known high school. I live in a small town, and because of that, have limited opportunities, although that is beside the point. I have taken as many AP courses available to me, including Physics, World History, English Language and Composition, and Human Geography. I scored a 31 on the ACT as well, and am about to receive the new SAT scores next week. I am involved in NHS and NEHS, and am IT Manager at NEHS. What chances do I have at Tulane or Cornell, assuming I apply ED?

The good news is that your ACT puts you in Tulane’s 25-75% range, so that gets you over one hurdle! What is your GPA? 3.7 UW or above is good for Tulane. However, and here’s the kicker: research the heck out of the school. Be prepared to tell the Admissions Committee what you hope to focus on and why Tulane’s department appeals to you, potential faculty with whom to research, a potential interdisciplinary approach to your major(s), and how you might help out the city of New Orleans via community service. A little about your South African background and an insightful analysis of your small town culture and how it has shaped you and motivated you positively or negatively couldn’t hurt as well. Do all that and the admissions gods might very well smile upon you! Best of luck to you!

As mentioned above, you have good chances at Tulane, but a 31 on your ACT is on Cornell’s lower side. But we would need to know your GPA to better predict your chance

@Burrito12 @NJDad68 i have a 3.8 GPA. If not Tulane or Cornell, where should I apply ED? Is Tulane good for philosophy?

Sorry, forgot to mention that philosophy is my intended major

.

Yes, Tulane has an excellent Philosophy Department and a great, interdisciplinary approach to the major, overlapping with cognitive studies, mathematics, linguistics, and law, among others. The two interdisciplinary tracks are: (1) Law, Morality & Society; and (2) Language, Mind & Knowledge. Of course, you can also opt for a standard Philosophy major. If you do the Law/Morality track, take Jonathan Riley’s course. My son loved it! (While you’re at it, you might inquire as to what he is working on publishing wise!). Best of luck to you!
