NOTE: I am being determined whether I am accepted or rejected through ATHLETIC ADMISSIONS, not as a regular applicant. I am wondering if they give slack to their athletes like how they do at UC Berkeley??

My grades haven't been the best due to experiencing a massive frequent number of family deaths.

First of all what sport are you trying to get admitted in? UCI is a D1 athletic program. Most of what you have on your post is non athletic items but you are asking about an athletic admit. To be recruited to a D1 program you should already have an established relationship with the coach of that sport. If you do and the coach wants you they can likely get you thru admissions. My son went to a UC and the coach got some of his teammates in who would not have gotten in otherwise. My biggest concern is why you are inquiring about athletics when you don’t appear to have anything except some football and track and field experience.

@momof2010‌ Sorry for the vague information, I am getting recruited for Track and Field ( Shot put , Discus , Hammer)

You might get in so, if I were you, go ahead and apply. The PAC islander may help.

She told me she was going to run my transcripts through the admission office and then let me know… I’m just so nervous if I’ll get accepted . Don’t they give slack in terms of accepting athletes in admissions?

Nope, not really. Our state has a lot of athletic talent so it depends on the division program and how much the coaches want you.

Well I mean she obviously wants me ( not trying to sound rude or cocky) if she goes out of her way to contact me… And it’s D1

“Well I mean she obviously wants me ( not trying to sound rude or cocky) if she goes out of her way to contact me… And it’s D1”

That is the nature of recruiting, and specifically D1 recruiting…the coach will contact **many, many recruits **to find the best athlete that he/she can get admitted. You need to contact many, many colleges to find situations that fit your goals. In my son’s situation they looked at thousands of kids for 8 spots on his team. Not terribly good odds when you really think about it.

You seem to have the academic bases covered primarily with your SAT and ACT. If I was an admissions person I would ask questions about your high school classes…no APs. I’d wonder if you truly challenged yourself in the classroom. You may want to think how you would answer that question if it comes up.

You are a field specialist with discus, hammer and shot put. Wouldn’t it make sense for them to look at as many athletes as possible (state & regional champs) before making a decision and eventual offer? I think you need to do some more homework about track & field recruiting and scholarships. What little I know about track and field scholarships is they don’t have many scholarships for men, and they double up the scholarship runners with cross country. Where does this leave you? I don’t know, but you need to find out more information specific to your events at this school and potentially others.

Good luck.

@fenwaysouth‌ thank you so much for the answer. Once again sorry for the vague info , but I do have AP’s

My son’s coach got a couple kids into his UC that would not have gotten in otherwise and they were not necessarily top tier recruits. One of them was not receiving any money and the other a small sum. The coach can get you in if he wants you on team. If you are not looking for money than you really have a good shot. SAT’s are good, grades so so for UC’s

So, if you have very good SATs and some APs (assume you did well) then you probably have the academic side covered. Now, I think you need to find where you sit athletically with this coach and if there is any scholarship money available. I get the sense you are mostly interested in this school for its academics than for any scholarship money…and that is fine. While you are doing that, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to reach out to other coaches (Berkley, etc…)to check on their recruiting needs and requirements. As you reach out to a dozen or two dozen schools you will start to get a sense of your overall demand and supply for athletes with your similar talents. All the grades, SATs, your ethnic background is only going to matter so much as a recruited D1 athlete. Bottom line is you have to demonstrate (or project) that you are a capable D1 athlete to be a part of that recruiting conversation. Ask the coach and research some of the throwing distances for their current throwing athletes. Good luck.
