Chances at UCLA Admission?

Bump!

MSG2Short.

i definitely think your fine! you will definitely get in! mind chancing me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-los-angeles/1300563-please-chance-me-im-dying-here-ucla.html

Thanks for your chance Liza. I did chance you. Anyone else give me a chance? =)

Are Chance Threads for moral support? because everyone is telling you that you are in, which I mainly agree with x) My only concerns are,
How did you do Freshman year? I think your Extracurrics are a little weak, but your volunteer service is phenomenal ! and what is your major?- I missed it if you have already stated any of this. Your Standardized Testing scores are so good >< I would say with straight A’s you would be a shoo-in but that GPA will hurt you. Will a C hurt? probably, but if you explained it in your app anywhere they could over look it, possibly. I think you have really high chances regardless. In terms of GPA I heard it NEEDS to be over a 4.0, which yours is? xP
*Does your High School weight Honor Pre Calc, Hon Physics, and Hon Chem??
From what I understand, if they do not, then neither do the UC’s typically. And if that is the case, I sadly do not think you will be accepted.
btw this is the GPA I calculated for you…
Unweighted=3.435
Capped=3.783
Fully Weighted= 4.043
just being picky with you (:
(I did not include you B in Health at all, since it is not an A-G course. And I included weight on Pre Calc, Hon Phy, and Hon Chem)

Chance threads are mostly to get an input from others. They aren’t for moral support, since moral support doesn’t affect your chances at all, which would be self-defeating for “chance” threads. Just like data collection, you want more input from others in order to get a more accurate idea. Just because people have said I was “in” doesn’t mean necessarily that I am. I just want to get as much feedback as possible, so that I don’t stay deluded to something that might not happen. Even though I have experience with the stats UCLA wants, I made this thread to get unbiased opinions. Obviously my own judgement is clouded because of hopes/expectations/pessimism/whatever.

Thank you for the GPA correction. I didn’t actually calculate this GPA. My counselor just gave a rough idea from her calculations (her first year as counselor sigh). I will trust your calculations are correct.

Yes, my school does weight those honors classes. Their “weighting” is exactly like the UC weighting. Any A-G required class honors level isn’t weighted while any honors level in a non required class IS weighted.

With this in mind, mind giving me your new opinion of chancing? I only see “From what I understand, if they do not, then neither do the UC’s typically. And if that is the case, I sadly do not think you will be accepted.” as a chance for now.

My major is biochemistry.

I did explain the C in the application and hopefully UCLA understands from the school summary that my school is SUPER COMPETITIVE for grades (2270 SAT is 85th percentile). Could I have gone to a much easier school and gotten straight A’s like my sister? Probably, but I wanted to challenge myself and prepare for college.

If I missed any of the questions you had in order to give a better “chancing”, please tell me.

Thanks for your input.

+1 for moral support.

What were your grades freshman year? if you had straight a’s your trend goes down (mine does) If not, then the trend stays constant, which is good, good either really. with no bias. I believe with over a 4.0 weighted, at a competitive school, with 2 self studied AP’s, very competitive SAT and matching ACT scores, with a once in a life time type volunteer experience, and family problems, WITH (I do understand affirmative action has been struck down, but i have personally been told at my college admissions office that it sadly? still comes into play WHEN) you are first generation, low income, minority. You have two of the three. You may have lowish E.C’s and Grades, but who says they want absolutely perfect candidates. We are only human, and I believe you possibly could have done better with your grades if you could go back in time, but a couple of letters and numbers do not reflect all the hard work we all put in over these four years. With a little luck with who your two admission readers were, I think you have been accepted and I wish you luck x)

My Freshman year grades are bad, then good. The first semester was bad because I went from being at the top 5 of my class in middle school to this super competitive environment where they take all the straight A students from every middle school in the city and plop them into one school.

Here they are:

Advanced Algebra Honors B/B (unweighted)
Modern World History B/A
Biology B/A
English B/A
Vocals No/A
TA A/No
PE(Doesn’t count) A/A

My second semester grades were all A’s except one B, but these were regular classes, so after I was used to the extreme rigor of my school (in regular classes at least; definitely not honors/AP level), getting A’s in them wasn’t too difficult.

EDIT: Funny state we live in where Asian isn’t considered as an ethnic minority. ;)

Thank you for your input.

did you get in? :/
