Chances at UCONN Honors

Instate Asian male, looking to see if I can get in to the UCONN honors program. Originally posted in the UCONN thread, but no response forthcoming.

Work Experience

Summer 2014-Current:

Spent my summer at a Yale biotech lab doing research on non-small cell lung cancer. Helped discover an interesting correlation between drug-treated cancer cell migrations and a certain glycoprotein.

Currently working in the same lab throughout my senior year, working on an independent project, albeit under guidance of a graduate student who I worked with over the summer. Focusing on brain cancer and immune cell interactions.

Summer 2013

Interned at AstraZeneca in Shanghai, Helped out with drug development of TRCP6 for kidney disease,

Volunteering

I volunteered at Yale New Haven Hospital this summer

I help out at church a bit as well as at the soup kitcen

Extracurricular

Im involved in Interact Club, Student Council, as well as Ecology club.
I am not a club leader in any, but I am leading an interact project and am a co-founder of a tutoring group in the school to help underclassmen struggling with math.
Will be playing in a music festival
I am a student representative for advisory commitees and was on a NEASC board, but that was all relatively minor.

Sports
Played tennis all past three years, did varsity and junior varsity, no captainship

Ran Cross Country and Indoor track last year as well.

Essays
Have two great teachers writing my recs, APUSH and AP Chem. Both liked me alot

Have the grad student I worked with writing an essay, and then having the professor sign off on it.

Guidance Counselor: IDK about this one, we get along but dont interact much. Probably will be very generic

Mine: I feel pretty strong about this one, my college counselor whose seen through alot of kids who've gotten into Ivies was pretty enthusiastic about it.

Weaknesses

I feel like I put to much emphasis and overestimated the importance of research, especially since I haven't won any big prizes. I will be planning on entering the UCONN Symposium, but that will be to late to make an impact I feel. My SAT scores are also a bit weak, will be working on getting a high 22. No club leadership is a big weakness in my opinion, I just am not involved to much in my school to make me like a leader in any sort. Sports are also slightly weak.

Thanks for all reading and commenting.

My daughter got into the UConn Honors program with similar SAT’s and GPA. She also received the Academic Excellence Scholarship. I think it is about $5,000 per year merit.

Thank you! I am slightly worried about not standing out in this years pool of applicants, but hopefully it will work out fine.

All of the students in the top 5% with over 2100 SAT’s got into the class of 2017 Honors Program from our high school with the Academic Excellence merit scholarship. My daughter had several friends who got into the Honors Program with lower stats but they did not receive $$. Another friend did not get into Honors initially but applied and got in after her freshman year at UConn with all A’s. She did not get the scholarship.

Okay thanks! I am hoping after the re-take in November that I can score a high 22 or low 23. Do you think I can perhaps stand a chance at University Of Virginia or UC-San Diego?

Your stats look good for UC-San Diego. OOS for UVA is tough with 2160. Better chance with higher SAT’s.

I will be sure to improve those scores, as well as do well on the SAT IIs. I hope to be obtaining co-authorship of a research paper, as well as qualifying for UCONN Symposium, but I do not know how big a role that will play in UCONN Honors or UVA. Thank you so much for your responses.
