Chances at UNC-CH? Please Reply!!!

Hi everyone, UNC is one of my top choices
for its undergrad business (and advertising?) program (I plan to do a major in business and choosing between a double major or a minor in advertising)

i was wondering if any of you can give me some pointers and advice to get in...

brief summary of myself:

Currently a Junior, live in Duluth, Georgia. Indian

GPA: Not really known, our school does not do GPA, However, I do currently have a 95 weighted cumulative avg. (Its basically the same unweighted)

Decent SAT: 1980 (2nd time) 700 writing, 650 math, 630 reading, Essay: 10

Class rigor- pretty rigorous, by the end of senior year i'll have 6 APs under my belt (oddly enough, I chose the APs that College Board recommends if I want to go into Business by chance), and just about every honors class to think of (except 3). Our school has been named Best Public High School in GA for 3 consecutive years. Unfortunately, even with a 95 average, I'm still only under the 17-19 percentile.. =(

ECs: Red Cross Club, Habitat for Humanity, Kaleidescope (aka Diversity Club), Model UN ....most importantly, I am the Creative Director of our school website (only 10 applicants in the entire school are chosen to work on the website...and being a REALLY competitive school..its a big deal.)

Countless volunteer hours in service organizations....Hospital Volunteens, Hindi School Volunteer (over 3 years)....lots of it. Not including top honors awards, National Honor Society, Legion of Honor, Honor Rolls, etc etc., VIP Award; its a teacher nomination award for excellence in character (2 nominations)

Duke TIP participant for 2 summers (its a lot like one of those Leadership conferences)...President of Model United Nations, Treasurer/Co-founder of the Red Cross Club.

Also, some of my friends and I have started a web design and graphics design company..its pretty intense. We've had a decent amount of clients and our numbers are increasing. We've gone the whole nine yards..everything from business emails/phone calls and marketing schemes. In fancy terms, I've been appointed Chief Design and Marketing ..and work on almost all the designs and deal with marketing issues and pricing

Interning at 2 companies in the coming year....an advertising agency and in a statewide Indian Culture Magazine. I interned at a small company 2 summers ago, Royal Gems Inc. I am volunteering with the Red Cross this summer.

Another thing, I'm currently in the process of setting up a fundraiser to get money to produce brochures about HIV/AIDS (which I am designing) to the Indian Red Cross who will then distribute them to some schools who do not teach sex ed..(My family has huge connections to the Red Cross in India, its unbelievable)...We'll see if this works, I've been really concerned about India's fight against AIDS, my interest started up after a pretty profound conversation about the state of India on a trip to Virginia Beach.

I also have about 3 AWESOME teacher recs. My essays will be great!

That being said...will UNC see my passion for business and advertising, and my joy for community service? Anyone think I have a genuine chance? ..could me being an Indian do any justice?

I'm not sure if this is an important addition or not..but Financial Aid is not really a concern.

Thanks so much! =)

everything looks really good except your SAT, you just need to get that up and you will have a really good chance

"GPA: Not really known, our school does not do GPA, However, I do currently have a 95 weighted cumulative avg. (Its basically the same unweighted)"

you will need to covert that to a 4.0 scale. There is a formula online converting numeric/100 gpa to a 4.0 scale. you will notice that alot of people have a 4.15 etc. That is because they have alot of AP classes. Also I don't remember what county you are from. If you are in FuLton, then remove ALL of the wt added except AP/IB.

I am from Norcross and have been accepted for next year. I would say you are a border line deferral simply due to SAT. Get some tutoring. Try to get all above 700. FOr comparison purposes only mine were 800 math, 720 verbal and 680 writing. Also national merti finalist.

Other than those numbers I think you have it. Oh yeah, DEFINITELY do early decision.

at the college visit, the UNC admissions counselor they do not do GPA...

??

bump bump bump

I remember them telling me on my visit that they want the hardest classes possible at your school. YOu have that covered. If you live in Fulton County where they add points for honors classes, those points from your numerical/100 gpa need to be removed to get a true assessment. I was suggesting you could do two things to get a better evaluation of your gpa....1. convert to a 4.0 scale through an online conversion program and, recalculate your GPA removing the points added for honors classes. If you are in Gwinnett county which i am, no points are added for honors classes or gifted classes, just AP/IB and I believe those are allowed.
Like I said, I think if you get the SAT up high enough they overlook alot of things....but if you are border line....they look closely. Good luck

what does bump bump bump mean? seen that before on post

I think everything looks good. I know a lot of people on here will say you need higher SAT's, so that may be true since you are out of state. A friend of my daughter is in-state and was admitted to Carolina with a SAT of 1570, weighted GPA of 4.80, unweighted GPA of 3.88, and 7th out of a class of 362. She wrote great essays for her admission application. She was involved in various clubs - president of one club, some but not hundreds of community service hours, and involved with a couple different sports all through high school. I am just trying to say it is not always the highest SAT score that gets you in. There were a couple of kids at their school with SAT's scores of 2100 and 2200 with pretty good grades and they were deferred. They want to see the whole package - a very well rounded student. I know this girl worked her butt off all through school to get the highest grades, but would get too stressed out everytime she went to take the SAT. I think everything looks good for you.

The acceptance rate for an incoming OSS runs about 5.9% and therefore the competition for those limited spots (no more than 18% of the incoming freshmen), is fierce. Therefore, I believe you need to get the SAT's up regardless of the GPA. That will level you out. Was that a 1570 on the NEW SAT? out of 2400?

actually, the acceptance rate for OOS is about 18-20% lol...there is no school in this country that has an acceptance rate of 5.9%

That is we were told this year with the record number of applications/the limited number of spots in the freshmen class/limited number of 18% of those spots can be out of state students. However another person at the University said a number close to 10%. Of course we have to know the ratio of OS student applicants vs. IS student applicants to get a true number. WHat is accurate is that ONLY 18% are out of staters.

TO the point.....can she get in with those numbers?, I still think she best boost that SAT scores and she will have a better chance. What do you think Misstinax3? There is definitely a higher bar for OSS.

Someone posted this great site before, but here it is again:

http://alumni.unc.edu/article.asp?SID=4774

If you look at the bottom, they have the admissions stats from 2006. Here are just some numbers that are relevant for you.

Average SAT score OOS: 1327
Middle 50% OOS: 1240-1440

Out Of State Applicants: 10,898
Out of State Admitted: 2,175
Admit %: 20%

There are a lot of other stats too, so you can kinda see where you stand.

i agree, the SAT is a bit low, and it seems like OOS applicants who score below 2000 dont have a high chance unless there's a hook. but everything else looks pretty solid
