Chances at UT Austin?

I am a junior in high school of Indian background looking to major in economics, with pre med. I have a 3.58 unweighted GPA and I got a 1900 on the old SAT. I live in Texas and moved here from the Northeast after my freshman year (I think this experience will help for essays). I’m ranked 82 out of my class of 600, which is the 14th percentile.

I am the founder and president of Investment club, the president of Political Debate Club, Co-Founder and Co-President of Ultimate Frisbee Club, secretary of Key Club, member of DECA, member of HOSA. I am also an inductee of the Chickfila Leader Academy, National Honor Society, and Spanish National Honor Society. I was a captain of the JV soccer team at my school this year that won a district championship and will be on Varsity next year.

I consider myself to be a strong writer so I hope my college essays will be compelling. I’d estimate like a 8 out of 10.

So my question is: will I get into UT or at least the CAP program?

Your EC’s look pretty solid, and there’s no time for any real improvement for your GPA, so you’ll have to bite the bullet there. Your SAT score is a bit on the lower side, so I’d retake it to try for a 2000+, which’ll make you a lot more competitive. The fact that you’re also of Indian background will most likely appeal to them too, since UT is such a diverse school. Good luck!

Your chances aren’t going to be great in the 14th percentile with a 1900. You would get capped with a 2000 most likely, and may even get it now. Just to clarify you’re Native American?

Hi, I’m currently a CAP student at UT Tyler. I never considered myself to be an extraordinary student (academically) but in high school I worked really hard to have a strong resume. I myself, was the President of HOSA at my high school as well as founder of several clubs. As I said, my academics weren’t strong. When I found out that I was CAPed by UT Austin, I won’t lie, I felt pretty bad. I mean, I grew up in Austin and UT Austin was my dream schooled. Now, as I write this response, I can tell you a lot about being a CAP student.
Right now, it is finals week, which means that, this is every CAP student at UT Tyler, its last week before transferring to UT Austin. UT Austin is indeed a great school, and trust me, if you are a dedicated student, completing the minimum 3.2 GPA requirement with 30 credit hours, is fairly easy. My major at UT Austin is BioChem which is kinda hard to get into but since you would like to be an Economics major, then you have automatic admission as long as you have the 3.2 GPA. Now, if you try to get into to a major other then Liberal Arts, then it becomes harder. My high school is none ranking high school, but in the end, what matters is everything.
What is the life of CAP student? Well, for me was pretty much studying. Since I had to take a bunch of math and science courses, I had little time to party and stuff.
Classes? Here at UT Tyler, classes are fairly easy, but don’t get to distracted and please, go to class. Many CAP students fail CAP because they do not go to class.
Partying? Here in Tyler, parties are rare and not that amusing.
UT Tyler? UT Tyler is a very small campus, it has nearly 10,000 students total. There’s only one library which kinda makes studying difficult. There are other places to study, such as the Pharmacy building. I live on campus, and honestly, it is very convenient.
Should you choose to do CAP, then I would say that you are in the right track to be a Longhorn!
Hope this helps answer some questions about CAP and being a CAP student. Good Luck!!

@t00nc0wn If you are applying to economics you have a pretty good chance. I think it’s one of the more competitive majors in COLA, but not nearly as competitive as business or engineering. I agree with @danfer91 , try to get at least a 2000 and you should feel pretty comfortable.

No Indian as in south Asian haha

@calacmul @pschnee Thanks for the help
