Chances at Yale? (Accepted early to Harvard!) + application advice

^ My pleasure. If you do end up getting an interview, it would be a great thing to bring up - it would show that you’ve taken some time to look into specific opportunities at Yale, showing interest. Yale is trying to attract more serious STEM students, so it would possibly help.

@lilypippili What is it that you love so much about Yale - why do you prefer it over Harvard?

@lilypippili http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1839756-chance-me-and-ill-chance-you.html#latest

@lilypippili, what city where you in, while you where in Ethiopia?

@renaissancedad That’s true!! Thanks again :slight_smile:

@suzyQ7 Not to be cheesy or cliche but when I visited I just knew, it was like a gut feeling. I just love the community so much. I want to go to a school where people are intensely proud of their school, and I see that in everything Yalies do – in the music video STUDENTS made for the information session, in the pranks they pull on harvard, etc. I was talking to someone who was a yale student (but I didn’t know that) and she asked where I wanted to go and I hadn’t yet decided at that point so I said harvard and she got so mad and said “No Yale is the best!” and I really want to go to a school that has people who love it that much. I just didn’t get that vibe from Harvard. And I know this shouldn’t be your first concern when you decide on colleges but since Yale and Harvard are both really great schools already I feel like I’m allowed to be picky over little things like that. Another thing is because of my school it feels like I’m expected to go to Harvard, like it’s the really conventional route and I think college should be a place for you to try something different and take risks. Plus I don’t know that if I chose Harvard it would be 100% for me, I feel like other people’s expectations would play a part in it.

You will most likely get into Yale. If not, guess you have Harvard as a backup. Don’t worry about aid, the ivies will give you all the money you need. You don’t need to apply to any other schools if Yale is your dream school. I wish I was in your position

I am aware of a young woman who is a Junior at Princeton leveraging her better financial aid offer from Harvard to better her financial aid circumstances at Princeton.
I would be surprised if HPY or Stanford didn’t make effort to match a multiple admits aid package.

@bkmaester well when I visited I stayed in Addis Ababa but my parents grew up in Debre Berhan

@bksoccer7 Thank you for the advice!! I realize how lucky I am and I am very grateful for it :slight_smile:

@GreatKid Do you think Yale/Harvard would match packages from UPenn, or a non ivy like Tufts? Or would they always just give more aid in the first place

lilypippili, it would be speculation on my part. My opinion is that it would be doubtful that you would get equal or better aid packages from schools other than the ones I had mentioned.
Have you run Net Price Calculators for Harvard, Yale, UPenn and Tufts?

“Harvard… and just Harvard (Why couldn’t it be Yale!!!)”
Not sure what the policy on cursing here is… So take a long walk off a short pier, buddy

@GreatKid I have for harvard but not for the others, whenever I tried asking my parents for all the info they didn’t have it… I can try again though, thanks I hadn’t thought of that!

@erpmk23 So tired of these hateful comments… :frowning: what are you mad about exactly?

I think you are a great candidate for Yale and were not bragging no matter what anyone says. Your stats are just a little above the norm for a Yale applicant and I’d say that Yale is definitely a target school considering you already got accepted into Harvard. The only thing that may be concerning is the fact that you didn’t take a science SAT II. Astrophysics majors are recommended to have a math and science SAT II. I think that may be a minor hole in your application. Other than that, I think you are definitely a well-rounded applicant and Yale is definitely a high chance fr you.

@CEOSandeep Thank you so much for chancing me!! Is it really recommended for astrophysics majors to take a science sat? I thought that was only for engineering majors… ah I’ve been kicking myself for months now for not taking the physics sat, I just couldn’t handle the additional stress of teaching myself basically 60% of the material :(( Welp guess there’s not much I can do about it now…

@lilypippili hey lilypippili. I’m in a similar situation with you in terms of options for colleges. Does Yale have a good business program? I might think about applying there

@NJCCNJ did you get accepted early?! Congrats!!! :slight_smile: Not sure why you’re asking me haha but someone told me Yale is pretty good in terms of social sciences so probably they’re good with business. I don’t think they really have a program though, just an econ major… why don’t you look at upenn? the wharton school sounds perfect for you!

@lilypippili thx. I might see you next year if we don’t do well on RD. anyway, I’m going to apply for upenn, but very close friend of mine might go to Yale, so I was just thinking about it.
