Hey all, I’m going into my sophomore year and I would like to know my chances at the elite schools based on my freshman year gpa/grades. So last year I took
Algebra I CC (87 on regents and finished class with a 93)
English 9H CC (Finished class with 94)
AP Bio (Finished class with a 100 (weighted) and got a 3 on the exam)
French II H (Finished class with a 101 (weighted)
Concert band (Finished class with a 100)
Global Hist I H (Finished with a 97 weighted)
I also took the Biology M subject test and got a 710
My final weighted GPA for freshman year was a 97.33 aswell.
I am taking AP Chem, Psych, and World History next year.
Thanks in advance!
Hello,
Congrats on the excellent grades!
It’s obviously too early to say anything and there isn’t enough information. If you keep up the great grades in challenging classes, you’re certainly on the right track academically! Based on your subject test score, I think you’ll do well on standardized tests as well.
However, there are still extracurriculars, essays and letters of recommendation to consider. If you provide some details on your extracurriculars and their route, I might be able to give you a slightly better reflection. But the latter two components are still totally unknown until senior year.
You might not like hearing this, but my main advice is to please not worry about college admissions right now. Take challenging classes and do well in school because of your own personal goals to strive to be perfect. More importantly, enjoy high school by figuring out your interests and pursuing them ambitiously – allow that to determine the sorts of classes you take, your hobbies and your extracurriculars. You should narrow down what you do outside school to one or two things and work your absolute hardest in becoming the best in them.
Looking back, I honestly really enjoyed high school and I would’ve struggled to do so if I kept worrying about what college I’ll go to in the future. I enjoyed all the times I debated with my teacher, made memories with friends at overnight tournaments and witnessed all the improvements and fun students had because of my diligence in leading an organization that I cared so deeply about.
In summary, you’re doing great so far! But remember to also enjoy chasing your dreams and helping others in whatever you love most, even if it’s something silly like performing magic or starting a fashion company. Don’t be afraid to be unique and don’t let anyone stop you from being you. If you stay ambitious and driven, naturally getting into good colleges will happen, but you’ll also develop something more important that transcends college and shapes your life experience and what you have to offer the world.

Hi! Thanks so much for your kind words! And I am currently in Science Honor Society and Im a member of thespians. I will take what you said into consideration. Thanks again!
I am 100% in agreement with @inevitablewinner , when I was in your grade I knew college was a thing but did not have any concern towards it whatsoever. Enjoy your sophomore and even junior years without thinking about college much or at all. I don’t even think I could name more that one or two Ivy Leagues until the start of my junior year and ended up getting into more than that. I don’t mean that as a brag but just trying to say, relax and enjoy your years.
