I just recently got my first B (in AP Calculus) and a little panic is starting to set in as to whether or not I’ll be able to be admitted to any of these schools.
My Grades from Freshman year to this last semester are:
Freshman year
Orchestra: A
Honors French I: A
Algebra II: A
World History: A
Honors English: A
Honors Biology: A
Wellness (gym): A
Sophomore Year
Orchestra: A
French II: A
Honors Pre Calc: A
AP Human Geography: A
Honors Chemistry: A
Honors English: A
Junior Year (1st semester)
AP Biology: A
AP English: A
Human Anatomy and Phys: A
Genetics: A
AP US History: A
AP Calculus AB: B
My weighted GPA is roughly 4.4, I’m not sure what my unweighted is as we haven’t gotten our transcripts back yet with the last semester updated. Here are my ECs:
10 years of orchestra (Cellist, 1st chair for 6 of those years)
Multicultural Club (Grade level representative)
National Beta Club
National Science Honors Society
French Club
Mu Alpha Theta
Self taught in Korean (Received a 560 on my SAT II korean test last year but I was distraught over just finding out about the tragic and sudden death of a close family member a few days before, I’m retaking it this year and I expect at least a 700)
Attended a week long summer program at Stanford (Tech Trek)
I’m worried that my ECs are not strong enough for the schools I’m looking at applying to. My school doesn’t have a lot of clubs, most of the organizations at my school are sports based and I’ve never been into sports. I’m also worried about my B in calculus bringing down my chances. Do I still have a chance at these schools? Any suggestions?
I would appreciate any reply, even just a short one!
I haven’t yet taken an official ACT (this is the test that is most common in my area so I will be taking that one) but I scored a 31 on a practice exam that I took earlier this school year with absolutely no prep. I plan on prepping and raising that score when I take the official ACT in April.
on paper, you look great. But you really need an actual SAT or ACT score (not just the practice ones) before anyone can chance you for this caliber of school. Also, your ECs do sort of seem generic. What’s the story of learning Korean? That might be something to write about in your essays. And what are your safeties? my mom pushed me into applying to 5 safeties and i resisted but when the 1st two deferrals came from my top choices, i felt really happy to have colleges that were interested in me.
I think you’ll be able to make it into at least a couple of your top schools. You need a great essay and recommendation letters. Those are harder to gauge since everyone I talk to tells me their essay is “great” but when I read them most of them are just average. If you need any help just let me know. I got into Duke with just 1850 on my SAT and a 3.1 GPA. Your essay and recommendation letters are much more important than your scores, trust me.
Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, (You need to break a min of 2250+ SAT 34+ACT to give yourself a fighting chance… ( i suggest looking for other colleges so you have a few safety schools)The only reason you might have a shot is the fact you are a minority
UC Berkely, UCLA (low reach assuming you break 2250+ SAT 34+ACT) unless you are in state
