chances? city?

So I'm a junior and I know it's a little early to start worrying about my chances of getting into Emory, but I really love the school so I was just wondering about them.

I have about a 95 unweighted average and I'm in three AP classes and two honors classes.
I am on the track and field team both winter and spring, in which I am a captain. Also, I am the secratary of the SHH (Spanish Honor Society) in my school.

My SAT scores aren't so hot, but I have a tutor and I am working on them. If I get my scores up do you think I should be okay.
I am going next month to visit the school and I'm super exciting, but I want to know if the area is safe. I'm from New York and love the South, but I have never been to Atlanta.

Thanks for any advice!

Hey welcome to the CC forums. As long as you take the most rigorous course at you school. (3+ years foreign language, all available AP/IB courses; all of this will be looked at by admission when you counselor send his/her mandatory report on it[called “counselor recommendation”) I can say that the visit will help tremendously, Emory is interested in student who are interested in them. Don’t worry about the SAT scores, a good GPA and rigorous course schedule can easily make up for them. That’s not to say stop practicing, just that their not as heavily weighed as one might think.

Also if you truly think Emory is your top choice, and the school you really want to attend, I would look into the Early Decision application.

your essays are very important. I would start now so you wont be as stressful later. Also, I would go get a common application account so you know the format of the college application. your activities are important; make sure you show that you are dedicated to them. volunteering is also important. make sure you show a lot of interest if your scores are no that outstanding–> when you sign up for common application account, under the supplement for emory, you will see the question that asks you to check off boxes. you want to check as many boxes as possible because it shows interest. lastly, I would go visit more than once (spring break and summer are best times) if grades are average

Thanks so much !

Like any big city, Atlanta does have its sunsafe areas. However, they are NOT near Emory. The areas around Emory are very nice.

By the way, there are three hotels on campus: Emory Conference Center, Emory Inn and University Inn. The Conference Center is the nicest and runs free shuttles to Admissions, or you can print out a campus map and enjoy a 20 minute walk across the campus.
