Chances? Easiest Major to get into, advice please!

Hello, I am a high school Junior from CA.

Stats:

SAT (first time…) Reading-490 Math-640 Writing-630

GPA 4.00 Weighted, Freshman - Junior year

Lots of ECs

I was thinking about applying to be an Agriculture Business Major because I hear it is easier to get in. (My first choice would be Business, but that is more challenging)

Am I borderline, most likely, or most likely not going to get accepted to Cal Poly?? Thanks!

Don’t apply to a major that you aren’t interested in. It is very difficult to change majors at Cal Poly.

Your SAT score is too low. Each section should be above 600 at least. If you get that up you should have a good shot.

Edit: CA State schools don’t look at freshman GPA. Recalculate it with just your sophomore and junior years for a more accurate opinion.

Yeah, don’t apply for a major just because it’s easier to get into. Apply for Business if that’s what you’re interested in doing.

AS for your chances, raise the Reading and Math score of the SAT and you should be well off. Don’t worry too much about Writing because I believe CSUs in general don’t consider the writing score at all.

Business and Engineering are definitely the hardest majors to get into. However, as everyone else said, major in something you will love because if you get accepted to SLO but don’t like what you’re studying, you won’t end up enjoying your college experience there. Good luck!:)

Cal Poly DOES count your freshman grades to determine your GPA. At least that’s the way it was when I applied last year. This is yet another way CP differs from the other CA State schools.

Update: As of 2012 materials engineering is the most competitive major at Cal Poly!

Aren’t all csu’s not accepting any freshman for the next few years? Not to ruin your dreams of going to cal poly, but I dont think you will be able to…

I heard from the LA Times that no students will be accepted for Spring semester 2012 and all students admitted for next fall semester will have a pending admission, if the Nov. tax ballot for CA passes students will be admitted.

You will have to submit an original eligibility form to determine if it was possible for you to get in first place

@katester – one tip. Take the ACT. You’ll probably perform better and Cal Poly prefers that test anyway. My kid scored significantly higher on the ACT than the SAT. He did OK on both, but for Cal Poly we only submitted his ACT scores and ultimately he was accepted.

michael2 “Update: As of 2012 materials engineering is the most competitive major at Cal Poly!” What is your source for this?

I’m curious too, I’m a third year MatE, and a friend of mine made the same claim. I’m little curious on the stats…

Don’t apply for a major that you don’t want to be in. It is a little hard to change majors at SLO (though it is not impossible, two of my three roommates got to change).
Industrial Engr==> Communications
Econ==> Comp Sci. (she had a lot of APs)

I know someone that gotten into Soil Science (he click the wrong thing at application) and thought it would be easy to switch but it took him a year and a half because he was going into something competitive.

Ag majors are the easiest to get into. Other than that-Psychology and Sociology. Bigger majors that aren’t super popular are easier. City and Regional Planning and Construction Management is on the easier side

Source: The head of the materials engineering department mentioned it to the people who went to open house.

Sorry I didn’t respond sooner.
