Awards:
I'm extremely weak in this area, I haven't won anything at all b/c I was clueless about this before, would this hurt me?
-AP Scholar with Distinction
-AIME qualifier
-Some school Awards

So what are my chances? Thanks!

bump... 60+ views, and no reply?

I didn't really have any awards - they tend to be more popularity contests, or reflecting who spent time chasing awards rather than who deserved awards. don't worry too much about that.

that's a good SAT score and a good GPA. you seem to be taking a bunch of tough classes.

can you talk a bit about why you want to go to Columbia, and why SEAS specifically? I'd just like to hear it from you before we go more in-depth.

Thanks for the reply Denzera, I'm interested in the Columbia and SEAS b/c of the core base in the engineering curriculum. I like that i can have a more liberal arts oriented education and at the same time take the engineering hardcore classes. I like the focus in the applied math&physics department; there's a great variety of interdisciplinary areas that one can choose.

good chance ED, your ECs unfortunately are very science leaning, it's good to have a deep rooted interest in science, but it shouldn't be the only thing you do. The reasons for why columbia seem good enough. if including the above in your essays mentions specifics about apam dept, and why it attracts you, or what speicifically would make your experience interdisciplinary.

good luck.

^Thanks! Yea, I think I'll mention some specifics on apam. But, on Part I of the application, I indicated computer science as my first interest. I was trying to send in my Part I as soon as possible so that I can have a shot at an interview. Obviously, that has changed, do you think it'll matter if I mention APAM in my why columbia short answer, but it wasn't indicated on part I of the application? I'd already emailed the admission people once before to move me from RD to ED pool, so I don't want to send them another email. That'd just make me seem so undecisive.

sure, mention APAM peripherally. That shows research and consideration. you only get 250 characters, i think, so be brief.

I was an applied math major with CS minor, so if you've got any specific questions i'm happy to help.
