do you think i can still get into any top schools even though im not in top 10% (almost) and have a very poor sophomore fall semester grade (including one failing grade) BUT have a perfect SAT and SAT II scores and some VERY impressive extracurriculars and achievements?? i can also whip up fantastic essays and can definitely get excellent recommendations.

If your school is "super competitive rich private school," your grades are sufficient, although you might not get the same boost at UCs as you would at more conscientious, private colleges. I think the ECs are the weakest part of your app, but there isn't too much you can do about that at this point - although you can certainly try! I think the biggest thing that is under your control is SAT scores. If your ECs aren't strong you are going to want to come across as an academic superstar, which includes high SAT scores.

Study hard for the SAT & try to get as involved as possible and you should have a decent shot.
