Essays & Reccomendations
Should be good

Hook
I’ve written my own language from Indo-European roots, and hope to present this either in my essay or as supplemental material. I’ve done it pretty deliberately, over a long period of time, and also somewhat scientifically. I also plan to do some research in the social sciences, but that’s a big if. (Would it help me if I did?)

White male from Philadelphia, private school of less than 300 (I have done almost every EC there is except sports)

i love the bit about the language...if you can use it for the essay, u're bound to get accepted

Great hook! And if Amherst needs a language specialist you should be in. And yes, that's how it works out. Get the stats, you have them. Then hope you fill that elusive slot that they want filled. There are no interviews, so make sure your essays are stellar, and show who you really are. That's what they want from them - to glean YOU from them. Good luck!

language is fascinating. In addition to the academic explanation about it. I'd be interested as a reader to know, however only briefly in a paragraph or else folded in throughout...why you got involved with it, what it means to you, what discoveries you made while doing it, or what you'd do differently if you were to do it again..
that is: i wonder about the personal meaning that this research choice has/had for you.
Adding that quality, the personal meaning, will put it over the top, IMHO.
Whether or not they or you want to continue that piece of research during college, they'll come to know how you think and what you value.
That's what Amherst means by "let us get to know you personally." They're not only wondering what you think about your parents' divorce (if they had one); in fact, don't bum them out. Stay positive and let them get to know the best of what you can be within the college community there.
Good luck.

srry to inreude but could you have taken more honors coursEs in yor school+ if so why didn't you ...

i'm not trying ti be mean ,i sAy this becAuse colleges do look At whAt is offered as opsoed t whAt you tAkE

My school doesn't offer Honors except for freshman and sophomore Math.

If you are interested in linguistics, you can take linguistics classes at UMass, which has one of the best programs in the world.
