Chances for a dream at the Ivies, NYU, or Johns Hopkins?

@iiRoMii Thanks so much :slight_smile: I hope tomorrow won’t disappoint me so much

How are your grades in math, science, and computer science?

Your math SAT scores are very good for anywhere except for MIT (and Caltech), but only sort of okay for MIT. Your GPA is not going to blow them away either. I did see quite a few students at MIT (including me) who got in with a GPA similar to yours, but with 100’s and 99’s in math and sciences, and 90s or even less in languages and other courses.

I am pretty sure that needing financial aid should not matter at all. MIT is need blind for all students, including international students. Being an international student however does lower your chances.

Given what you said above, I put it as a high reach.

You should def consider UMich, seems like your type of place

@giraffelover32 Do they give good aid to internationals? Also, I don’t really think I would prefer to live in Michigan.

They give 100% of your financial need, and yeah, it’s an adjustment for sure but the campus town is awesome, ranked one of the best public schools in the nation, and there’s a lot of job recruitment there because all the automotive companies are in detroit

@iiRoMii best of luck!

@giraffelover32, UMi does NOT give “100% of financial need” to international students!! Indeed, most international students are required to show proof of funding.

i’d look at their website, it says it meets all demonstrated need for int’l students

Oh I did not know that. Then that would definitely stick out as a good school I would apply to. However, would you mind analyzing my chances for the schools listed above? I know they are prestigious and it’s most likely a crapshoot but how do the extra recs help, if at all? and are there any tips i can do to improve my chances.

sorry, i guess i’m just feeling a bit down after the deferral even thought I sort of expected if.

Also, I have another question. How deeply do these schools look at intended major? Could I have possibly been rejected or deferred as my intended major was pre med/biochem but my ECs did not line up with that? Therefore, would it be recommended to go undecided?

@giraffelover32, please provide a link. What I found said that financial aid for international students is very limited- largely to permanent residents, refugees, etc:

https://finaid.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/loanint.pdf

and specifically that people with ‘temporary’ visas are NOT eligible for financial aid:

I would not mind applying to UMich if I was able to get any merit scholarships .
