CHANCES for a NERD?!!!

I hail from CT!!! I was born in CA!!! I lived in MD!!! and VA!!! Anyway, that has nothing to do with my post. I want to know my chances at getting into MIT EA. Im hoping for a good interview, essays will be good-excellent?, and my recommendations will be very strong. btw, Im white and a male, which obviously changes my chances at admission. So help a brotha out. You dig?

Intended major: mechanical engineering, with a minor in robotics. Any responses would be greatly appreciated (and no sarcasm please!). My stats are below:

My only worry is that I dont have any research. Will MIT take into account the fact that there are few opportunities for research in mechanical engineering, especially for a high school student, when compared to other fields such as biology or chemistry?

You're amazing. Don't worry about it.

if you dont get in, please tell me and i will personally write them a letter telling them how dumb they are for not accepting you

70% chance.

-----------------------------------------bump----------------------------------------

I am curious why you are posting here. Surely you must realize your stats are nearly perfect? MIT is no sure-thing, but your strengths as a student are certainly apparent. Don't mess up the rest of senior year and write a coherent essay and you should get in.

---------------------------------------------bump-------------------------------------------

70% chance. seriously. You might get in but at a school like MIT it's unpredictable. 70% max.

can i have the opinion of someone who realizes the difficulty of getting into MIT. No offense btbvector, but no one has a 70% chance of getting into MIT.

I like nerds, so I'll reply. I think you've got a great shot- you've obviously got the neccessary math talent, but you're also nicely rounded and involved. The awards are great, the fact that you have a job is excellent. Nerds are awesome, and you're an amazingly strong candidate wherever you apply- Good Luck!

YOU have a great chance... wow... very impressive.
btw, 70% is probably the max a person can get at a place like MIT

70 percent chance

I'm just a mom, but here's my opinion. You look to be a very competitive candidate. The lack of research experience shouldn't keep you out. As I'm sure you're aware though, most of the students who apply are qualified to attend and only 16% are admitted.

Here are the numbers I got off of their site for the class of 2008. http://admissions.mit.edu/AdmissionsWeb/appmanager/AdmissionsWeb/Main?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageWhosAtMIT

Who could be a student at MIT: Admissions Statistics

The class admitted for fall 2004:

1,664 admitted

2833 students applied early action
438 students admitted early
2169 students deferred to regular action
324 deferred applicants admitted during regular action

2165 international students applied
104 admitted

Middle 50% score range of admitted students:
SAT I Verbal [680, 770]
SAT I Math [730, 800]
ACT Composite [30, 34]
SAT II Math [740, 800]
SAT II Science [700, 790]
SAT II Humanities [700, 790]

71% attended public high school
21% attended private or parochial schools

Good luck!

Thanks for the links, Over30. Its interesting that the interview is back.

You have about as good a shot as anyone for MIT.

good luck, man.

I am sure you are smart enough to realize that you do have a chance, and that no one on this forum can tell you exactly what your chance is in %.

can anyone think of any weaknesses i have? I know, as a senior, that it's too late to do anything about it, but a view other than my own would be helpful. Thanks for all the replies guys!

You are simply amazing... good luck

I am doing research in a lab for organ preservation and stem cells and I am wondering what is the national engineering design challenge? did you win or just enter the competition?

thanks and good luck

we just entered, no win for us. Our school did win the national competition three years ago. Sadly, it was cancelled this year, so we're doing JETS, a sister competition. Anyway, your team is given a certain problem, and you must design and build a new product that solves the problem. This also includes marketing the product, keeping cost in mind, etc... so very much like the real world.

wow... that seems really cool. I am very interested in that. Do you know where these competitions are and whether or not they are in new york?

thanks
