chances for a rising senior?

now that SATs and GPAs and leadership positions are finally rolling in, I can start giving you guys more than predictions on what my "stats" are. I'd appreciate if you could just give me general opinions not so much on my 'chances of admissions' (yea, yea i know that's the title of this thread lol) but my strengths and weaknesses (other than my GPA)

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2370
[] ACT: 35, 36, 34, 34
[] SAT II: 800 math2, 800 bio, 800 ush, 780 lit
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.82; terrible, i know, but i moved here last year and had adjustment issues. upward trend following my move here. [equivalent to all A's and A-'s and 11 B+ TRIMESTER grades which is about 7 B+ semester grades]
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): none; but i'm considered a "smart person" who's expected to get into some top schools--then again, they probably haven't seen my transcript where 6 of those semester B+'s came from last year]
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): i predict 5's on my four APs this may.
[] Senior Year Course Load: most rigorous, as always
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): a few art awards (one international one where I will be published in a magazine; one national one), state champion in math, x2 1st place regional essay contest winner, x9 state qualifier in varsity swimming [NOT being recruited], some school awards

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): art (see awards above, 12 yrs), varsity swimming (captain), research (500+ hours, assistant), charity club (president), culture club (president), another culture-ish club (minor leadership role), volunteering (100 hours)
[] Job/Work Experience: science research, 6-week internship
[] Volunteer/Community service: 100 hours
[] Summer Activities: science research ('08 and '09), internship ('09), volunteering ('09), art ('08, '09)
[] Essays: should be pretty amazing.
[] Teacher Recommendation: pretty solid BUT NOT 'best student ever' (i go to a prep school in which recs are taken very seriously) and will definitely be top 10% and top 5%, maybe a few top 1%'s
[] Counselor Rec: see above
[] Additional Rec: art teacher (amazing; one of best students), research mentor (probably strong but not amazing)
[li] Additional materials: art supplement (very, very strong), possibly a science abstract. would these supplements + 2 supp recs be way too excessive?
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: probably
[] Intended Major: art (out of curiosity, will this help? can i list that i want to try to double major in art/science?)
[] Country (if international applicant): US
[] School Type: small, secular, private, very competitive; to give you an idea, ~30% are NMSF, avg sat is a little over 2100, 10-12% to ivies + mit/stanford each year, most prestigious in midwest, etc.
[] Ethnicity: asian :\
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: art, science research, i have more leadership than 95% of people here, even though i've been at this school for half the time than everyone else, essays
[] Weaknesses: GPA, definitely.
[] Mediocrities (ok, i made this one myself): maybe academic recs? i'm not reading them, but they will be great but nothing that will make adcoms pee in their pants.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: if in, definitely the ECs/essays. if rejected, probably GPA/mediocrity in recs.

thanks! i know this is incredibly long, but i'm really bored.

Your doing good. The B+s on the GPA might hurt (A lot) though. You should get into some pretty good schools, still.

Judging by what Yale did SCEA round - do not try SCEA - it is very restrictive. Try getting in some great schools ED or EA and try Yale in RD. SCEA is just not worth it!

why not Yale EA? if its your first choice, go for it! Yes you have amazing stats, etc and you have the ability to do well at any school including Yale, BUT there are 10000 kids out there just like you.

what I basically means is you have many options… apply to top schools such as (wherever best fits you) Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, some schools that are middle range and that will give you merit aid and a couple of safety schools as well… Good Luck!

What I mean is do not waste your Early chance on an Single Choice Early Action school. Try top schools like MIT and other which offer Early. But do not waste yourself on "single choice’

i see what feb5 is saying… yes if you apply to Yale SCEA, it is the only school you can apply to early, but if it is your first choice, it may be worth it (and it is! - a little bit biased)

as of now (and probably until November) yale is my first choice school, so it’ll probably be SCEA. i want yale so much that i’m willing to sacrifice all other EA schools for it, sadly. haha

In 2009 SCEA rejected a lot of applicants - deferred fewer - and later in RD also was not too great. If they do not accept you SCEA (they dont unless you are absolutely stellar) you have a lot of work in Dec and schools like Columbia/UPEnn/Brown/Dartmouth which do ED has filled up a sizeable portion of their class with ED. And you are left struggling. Take an honest look at your resume - and make your decision - if you are willing to take the risk - go for it.

I have heard advice on NOT to apply to Yale SCEA because it puts you in a much more competitive pool. True, they do accept more people, but it’s only because the people are much more qualified. And it can be potentially devastating if you are rejected.

bump! just curious.
oh, and scrap that 2370. i had a horrible test and got a mid 2200, and deciding whether or not to retake.

I think the gpa could be a problem. Does Yale take into account that your school is a “small, private, very competitive” school?
