Chances for all UC's, Georgia Tech, George Washington University?

Hi all,
Would it be worth it to apply to UCSD, UCI, Georgia Tech, George Washington University, UCR, UCDavis, or really any UC? And also Cornell (very high reach and practically impossible with my grades but it wouldn't hurt to ask), Colorado School of Mines or should I only apply to CalStates (or go to a UC after a CC with the TAG program)

My UC GPA after this semester will be 3.17 UW and 3.4 W. Overall I will end with a 3.2 UW and a 3.6 W (after 1st semester senior year).

My freshman year grades aren't worth mentioning but I took these academic classes (and two non academic but required classes; PE and an Art)
Honors English,
Honors Geometry
Honors Biology
Spanish I

My courses and grades from Sophomore year up are:
AP World History (3 on AP Test) - B/B
Chemistry Prep C/C (Teacher wouldn't round up my C+ :( )
Honors English 2 B/B
Algebra 2 Prep B/B
Spanish 2 B/B
PE A/A

Junior Year:
AP Art History B/A
Pre-Calc Prep C/A
AP English A/A
Physics B/A
AP USHistory B/A

SAT: 2280

Senior Year Classes (aiming for all A's)
AP Calculus BC
AP Psychology
AP Physics
AP English
AP Comp Sci
AP Econ/Gov

I'm going to be taking my SAT II's for Math 2, US History and Literature within this year. I'm also taking Calculus 2 and Statistics at my community college over summer (which is actually a very good CC). I write very good essays and so I'm assuming my personal statements/essays will be excellent.

ECs:
60+ Community Service hours Freshman year volunteering through Key Club.
Volunteered to tutor kids at the elementary school, 3 times a week (for several weeks)
Did a three week program at a gaming university in Texas, over summer.

Not much sophomore year (personal/family issues)

Junior year (not sure if some of this counts):
Tutor my neighbor's two sons, several times a week.

Help out an OBGYN with general technical related stuff once a week for a few hours.

President of my own club (pertains to Law) and officer positions in two clubs (relating to Business and Biology)

Tutoring/teaching young usually foreign kids how to read, twice a week.

Helping my father and his friend with their company, developing/improving a program for doctors to store their files on the computer instead of paper. (mainly for private practice as required by the new Obamacare laws)

Self-Taught: Java, C++ and Ruby

Planning on interning at a company over summer.

Senior Year:
I'm planning on continuing to tutor young kids with their English development, learn another programming language, continue to help out my community and join the Speech and Debate team.

Other information:
I was born in Nepal, both of my parents were born in India.
Can read/write/speak and understand Hindi (First language) and am fully fluent in English.
Moved to the US when I was 6.
Moved 3 times after coming to the US, all in Southern California.
Dad went to an Cornell and University of Vienna, Mom went to Indian college and had to redo her BA/MA here.

I want to apply to the colleges I previously listed, and if you guys have any suggestions. I want to major in either Computer Science or Biology (and hopefully to well on my MCAT's in college for a good medical school).

Thanks.

I really don’t have much to add to my previous post on your other thread.

Straight As for the rest of high school feels unlikely to me but, good luck.

Keep an open mind, apply broadly.

@NCalRent Thanks and I will.

I think you have a solid chance at UCR but hey, if you have some amazing personal background story, you should try some of the higher up UC’s like UCSD and UCSB and UCD.

I don’t think colleges give you any slack for moving to the U.S. at a young age, unless it was like high school or recently, bc you’ve still been here for the majority of your life.

I had personal issues going on and I moved to the U.S. when I was 8 years old too, and colleges nowadays get a lot of immigrant experience essays as well, so I don’t know anything that stands out too much about you.

You showed improvement in your 2nd semester junior year, but colleges would probably insanely iffy aout you and would wonder if you could actually keep that progress up. Anyways those are just my thoughts and I wish you the best of luck.

Bump!

And thanks @iamnotready, I’m applying to UCR.

Does anyone else have suggestions/things to input?
Is it even worth it to apply to Georgia Tech/George Washington University or even the higher UC’s such as SD,Irvine, SB?

I have a feeling there is something about u that will get you into all those schools. I have predicted this before, and i see acceptance at GWU, UCLA, and UCI. Good luck and let the spirits guide you

You have a solid shot at all these schools. Good luck!

Your GPA is concerning but your SAT score is great. I think you have a solid chance at UCR, its pretty safe. UCI is a match, maybe a mild reach. UC Davis is a mild reach. UCSD is a reach, most people who get accepted to UCSD have 3.7 or 3.8 GPAs. Georgia tech, mild to moderate reach. George Washington, reach. Cornell, reach but your’re a legacy so you might have a good shot. I am not familiar with Colorado School of Mines or CalStates, so I’m not going to comment on that. But honestly, talk to some admissions counselors, do good on those SAT II subject tests, write a stellar essay and get some glowing recommendations. You’ll be fine. Overall, I think you have a shot at most of these universities. You have a great SAT score and you have that in state advantage for all the California schools. Good luck.

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1630250-chance-me-for-penn-state-uva-and-vt-will-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>

With the UC’s senior year AP’s don’t count towards your UC GPA.

In your senior year, I would only take 1-2 AP’s and only if you are definitely going to get an A.

Also, choosing engineering or computer science as your major with your GPA will probably hurt your chances of getting into a UC because those are very competitive and usually the GPA’s are much higher like 3.9 or higher.

Will your parents pay OOS for Georgia Tech tuition which is about $20K more than what instate students pay?
You don’t want to try to get into a school and then you cannot pay for it. That hurts more!

I think your chances might be better at SJSU (non-CS) or CPP, rather than UCR or UCSC which are reaches, especially if you choose engineering or CS.

Disclaimer: Mom of S Class of 2014 - no expert, just an observer.

Good luck!

@liveonboca @faiz97 thanks for the input, and I know I’ll be able to keep A’s in all AP classes my senior year.

Would you suggest trying to get in as an art or an “easier” major and then switch once or if I’m accepted?

And as for the OOS tuition, my parents will not be paying for my college and I am comfortable with student loans as long as I’d be going to a good school.

Bump

As a freshman, you can only take out $5500 in student loans. The rest would be up to your parents, savings, scholarships or grants???

I wasn’t aware of that, thanks. Then my parents would cover the rest, they would be comfortable with paying it as long as it’s one of the schools I’ve listed or equal.

Your GPA will harm your application significantly. If I recall, the average for 3.65. Your ECs are good, but I wouldn’t even consider Cornell at a potential acceptance. Good luck!

@wannabefeynman the average for what school is 3.65? And yeah that’s what I thought for Cornell haha, that’s my extreme reach/obvious rejection. Thanks!

Sorry for not writing the school’s name. I am not exactly sure if it was the average but I think for UCB or some other UC.

@wannabefeynman Alright, yeah UCB will be a high reach for me, do you think UCR/UCSC/UCSB is possible?

I think you have a decent chance at the schools which you mentioned. Good luck at them!

@wannabefeynman Thanks for your feedback and alright that boosts my hopes haha

You’re welcome.
By the way, don’t worry too much about it. Getting into a prestigious university or not is not the end of the line. The curriculum in most places is very similar and if you really dislike the university then you can always transfer.
