Worked at Outback one summer and ran track sophomore year.

I've taken the most rigorous course load throughout my high school career (AP's, Honors, etc.). I'm Arab-American if that helps at all.

Teacher recommendations: Absolutely amazing. I couldn't have asked for better.

Essays: I think I wrote some excellent essays, but you can never really tell with these colleges. We'll see.

College List:
1. University of Chicago (Early Action)
2. Northwestern University
3. NYU College of Arts and Sciences
4. Georgetown University- Georgetown College
5. American University
6. Cornell University
7. Carnegie Mellon

I commend all of you who took the time to read through that and let me know if you want me to "chance you" as well.

That was…a lot more optimistic than I expected. All you “Debbie-downers” and “negative Nancies” are welcome as well. I can handle the criticism.

Good GPA, course load, and large amount of ECs. I don’t see an EC that is totally unique, but it’s obvious you do lots of things. One important thing is to not make it look like a laundry list of unrelated activities on your app. ACT/SAT is low, which could hurt if they consider you an ORM. You are in the running everywhere, but let’s hope that your essays are well-received Good luck!

University of Chicago (Early Action)-low/mid reach

Northwestern University-low reach

NYU College of Arts and Sciences-high match

Georgetown University- Georgetown College-low reach

American University-match

Cornell University-mid reach

Carnegie Mellon-high match

Johns Hopkins University-low reach

The only ones I really know about are UChicago and American. You seem solid enough for both of those schools, and you’ve had a variety of long-term extracurriculars I know you already applied, so I hope you spent a lot of time emphasizing your favorite extracurriculars.

I wouldn’t say it’s a safe bet, but I think you can breathe a bit.

Thank you bigdreamer and jry2028 for your replies. I need a healthy confidence boost every once and a while, as I’m sure you all know this application process is incredibly stressful.

Also does anyone know where an Arab-American stands on the minority side of things? I wrote a person essay that takes place in Libya, as I visit it every other Summer, so I’m not sure how that will play out.

Hey! Another Hopeful Economist here (Class of 2012 though)

Middle Easterners are considered white in the college app process…no minority advantage there. But if you have a unique background that would be great for essays

University of Chicago (Early Action)…mid-reach - if you can demonstrate a genuine passion in Econ this may help your chances

Northwestern University…mid-reach

NYU College of Arts and Sciences…probably in

Georgetown University- Georgetown College…unpredictable. I’d say no.

American University…are you actually interested in going here??? Bc you are def in

Cornell University…reach - only bc of your SAT score though (any time to retake? 2050 with the low 600s in there is just a tiny bit dismal)
*Disclaimer: I hadn’t researched a few of these colleges (NYU, American etc) because I’m not interested in attending so these might not be 100% correct - just my honest opinion

Your major problem: SAT Scores…also I do not see any SAT II’s - am I just missing those.

One thing I forgot to mention. UChicago accepts ACT scores w/o writing and apparently they don’t weigh heavily on the writing portion of the SAT.

So for UChicago specifically:
ACT- 32 w/o writing
SAT- 1420/1600

You have a decent chance in getting in all the universities except maybe John Hopkins and Northwestern (low reach to mid). You’re extremely strong in extracurriculars, have quite a bit of leadership abilities, and your AP scores rock.
