Chances for an indian student at MIT

@woogzmama I just want to add that MIT is both need blind and meets 100% of need even for international students. So needing financial aid shouldn’t hurt him in the case of MIT.
To the OP: If you don’t need any financial help than I’m sure you’ll get into a top 30 program somewhere. If you need financial aid, look at state schools that give good Merit aid. The University of Alabama and Louisiana Tech come to mind. Also, you should get a full ride from Howard University.

@outlooker - I realize that, which is yet another reason that the competition is so fierce for admission among international students.

Howard and Ualabama(unfortunately) may not be the best choice if the OP is looking for joba in his or her home country. Not that it is eaeir to find jobs in the US anyway

MIT has a quota of international student of ~100 students- from all countries combined: http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/international_men_women_of_mys

@Jainul: this may be discouraging student because you’re probably the best student you know. Now, if you consider MIT will admit perhaps 5 students from all of India, surely you understand why people think your chances are small? At best, they’re about 1%.

In order to have you look at good universities where you have a shot, we need more details:

  • are you Dahlit? Brahmin? Parsi? Surit? Andaman? Adivasi? Naga?
  • do you live in a rural area?
  • is your school public or private, or do you study at home with a private tutor? If you attend a school, is it known for its academic rigor or is it a typical/unknown school? Are you the first to apply to a US college? Do you have a guidance counselor who is familiar with the US system? What percentage go to college of any kind after finishing your secondary school?
  • how did you learn English?
  • how much can your parents afford?
Yes, all of this will matter.

I actually live in a small town. i do not get much opportunities. My parents can afford to pay full fees.
I am the first to apply to US universities from my town. I do not have a guidance counselor. I am my own counselor. I study one of the most rigorous curriculum in India(

I study ISC(Indian School Certificate)

@jainul98 If you’re a full pay student, than I’m sure you’ll get into a top 30 program somewhere. probably not MIT, but surely somewhere like GAtech, USC, Umich, maybe even Cornell.

Cornell is need blind for everyone. However it doesn’t state whether it guarantees FA for int students or not. Probably it doesn’t.

can i get in to cal or ucla?

@jainul98 I think you can get into UCLA, but they won’t give you any financial aid at all. You’ll have to pay the full cost.

If you are planning to apply to Berkeley for Engineering or Computer Science, they are nearly as selective as MIT. UCLA isn’t much easier.

@outlooker UCs dont offer aid to international students.

I don’t understand where you might get in. If you were American, you would not be likely to get in to UCLA or UC Berkeley with your ACT or SAT composite scores. As an international, I would have to assume it would be even harder. Your SAT II’s are high, but Math Level II is low as a percentile, and your TOEFL is at about the 90% range.

I do not know how challenging/competitive your awards and ECs are- they appear impressive and may help immensely. There are many schools you could consider if finances are secure (as you state they are).

Look at the Common Data Sets for schools and try to be at the upper score range of the 25-75 percentiles of matriculating students. You have a wide range open to you since you can afford them. You may wish to look in Silicon Valley (San Jose State, for example) to be near internships and potential jobs.

Be sure to include a safety (something like Cleveland State University), so you are not shut out.

@jainhul98 You need to answer this question: How much money can your parents afford to pay?? What is your budget?

@outlooker i mentioned earlier that i can pay around $55000 easily

@jainhul98 If you can pay $55k than you don’t need to look for financial aid. I think you could attend UCLA or UCB.

@ItsJustSchool I saw the common data set and infered that berkeley and cornell are the best universities where I satisfy 25th percentile and At UCLA my scores are above 75th percentile. Futher I heard that international students have an advatage over their cr scores.

@outlooker are you sure? because ucb is my dream university

@jainul98 International students don’t have any advantage. In fact, they have a disadvantage in applying to schools like UCLA.
