My son is applying for 9th grade admission to the above schools and has the following credentials. What do you think his chances might be? He is a resident of Arizona and attends one of the top private schools in the state. He has already interviewed at all the schools and the interviews seemed to go quite well.

SSAT 94%

Grades: 4.20 GPA, never a B since 1st grade

Sports: 8 years of Ice Hockey
Golf 2 years
Drama: 2 years
Band: Tenor Saxophone 1st chair in Honor Band, Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble

Debate Club, Math Club

He looks like a great candidate, but you might want to add some community service! it helps a lot! what classes does he take?

Thank you for your input. We did include a bunch of community service on his applications. He is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and they have many community service events.

He is taking high school level Honors Geometry, Biology, French, Social Studies, Humanities, Band and Drama.

wow! He looks like a great candidate! I wish you and your son best of luck

Thank you!!! We will find out on March 10th!

Does he plan to play hockey at boarding school? Does he play elite level hockey now? Have you spoken/met the coaches? If so, what did you think of the programs?

Really nice. If he’s really good at ice hockey, he doesn’t need anything else. If’s he’s a recreational player, see if he wants to do anything else.

He plays recreational level hockey and plans to play in high school also. He submitted a video with his application for tenor saxophone and met with the music department heads when he interviewed.

That’s always a good thing. Meeting with departments and developing at least an acquaintance gives a chance to boost the opportunity. If they don’t like the video, then no harm done. But if they think your son is amazing, they’ll put in the good word. I hope you’ll be proud with whatever he does. He sounds like a great kid :)

your son is a great applicant! good luck.

Good luck to your son, he sounds well rounded and like a great candidate to go anywhere. Just a word of caution about the hockey though, as all of these schools have top programs that attract very high calibre or players from north america and beyond. As a rec player, he will find it difficult (if not impossible) to make varsity at any of these schools, but all have JV teams (though, this can be hard to make too), some have thirds teams or club teams too for less skilled players. I don’t want to discourage him about hockey, as he has a LOT to offer any of these schools beyond that, but you should be realistic. Most of the recruited players are on tier one teams and have been scouted. Walk ons are rare, but do happen. If his goal is to play varsity (and he has the talent and usually size too) then he can certainly try.

@bspreppie is correct in that. Word of wise, Andover = sports, humanities. Exeter = science, mathematics, music.

Thank you bspreppie and PxAlaska, my son is a rec level player and would play on a club team. I appreciate your feedback. :)

Is extensive community service involvement truly necessary for acceptance into the competitive prep schools? My C has done some, but honestly, it was not that important in C’s mind, and forgot to mention it on the apps.

Straight A/A+ student always

Mid-90’s on SSAT

Gifted artist with portfolio, various arts related clubs and fairly prestigious art award

A sport for 5 years - both a rec team and a year round travel team (pretty good at it, but not a superstar).

Debate club

Plays an instrument but not serious about it and probably will not continue with it in high school, so did not mention it on app.

Art and academics are C’s main passions, with sport mostly for fun, but with enthusiasm, and will continue in high school. Will the lack of community service take C out of the running, do you think?

Thanks!

@honoraryamom create a new thread so that we can separate people. I’d be glad to answer any questions then

Did you all got in?

They find out March 10th
