are you going to get recruited to play baseball or tennis?

This is really hard, because your stats arent the greatest (theyre still good, but for some of those schools you will be in the bottom half of applicants with a 3.45 and 2110), but your ECs are so good that they seem to be able to make up for the low GPA and somewhat low SATs. Also, you did take a hard courseload.

UPenn- slight reach
UChicago- match/slight reach
Northwestern- slight reach
Vandy- match
Emory- match
GW- safe match
BC- match
USC- safe match/match
UW- safety (not sure how hard the honors program is to get into)

im trying to for both. the problem for baseball is that i took this past spring off to play tennis. (our team was very very good and i wouldnt get great playing time and i also was coming off a choulder injury that wouldnt have allowed me to pitch at top form until late april) but i think i have a fair shot at getting a couple nods for baseball. at the least an offer to fly out to tryout.

should i make an effort to interview at any of the schools? im a good people person

I suggest that you try to apply to more Ivies than simply UPenn...those EC's and awards are mind-blowing. GPA and SAT (to a lesser degree) are obviously your only negatives. Do try to get recruited for debate or your sports...good luck!

Actually, how ever did you find time to do all your EC's, in addition to your classes?

you have to be on crack to say that UPenn is a "slight reach" with a 3.9W/3.45UW - 2110... I mean, this guy is obviously a very solid applicant with very solid chances, but even for the best of the best Penn is never definitively a "slight" reach...

I am definitely not on crack, what experience do you have with admissions to tell me that im wrong? there are very few people with ECs this impressive, and UPenn I believe is the second easiest ivy to get into (once you discard the stats for wharton, penn is easier than brown, dartmouth, and columbia). A 3.45 GPA wont stop penn from taking the OP. SATs arent a problem at all.

make sure you request an interview at uchicago, meaning get the app in early before all the interviewers are booked. I know penn also has interviews, but im not sure how the process works since i didnt apply there. BC doesnt have them, not sure about the other schools.

there's a distinction between the possibility of him being accepted (of which there is a solid possibility) and a statistical assessment of that possibility--by saying it's a slight reach, you're talking ~70% chance of acceptance, which is a bit silly since Penn's admit rate is around 18% to begin with, and even though his EC's are remarkable his academic stats are weak. the OP is my friend and i'm not trying to say he doesn't have a better shot than many who will be applying to penn, there is no magical hook that makes him go from "solid reach" to a "slight reach." (almost nobody is in that category) but now that i've clarified what I mean i think this argument is semantic and stupid, so this is all i'm going to say.

a slight reach means 30% or so, not 70%, thats a safe match

Might want to add Duke and good schools with strong athletics like Holy Cross or Bucknell. HC has a brand new multi-million dollar baseball stadium also used by minor league team. Holy Cross is also SAT optional with a very strong alumni network.

so i guess the disagreement is semantic...nevermind then.

should my essay try to reflect my dedication to debate and how much the activity has meant to me or would a better approach be to look to another ec (like student government or baseball) and show that Im multi-faceted

thanks

anyone else have relative chances for me.

I'm curious. What, exactly, is the second most compitetive public high school in Washington State?

the OP attends Bainbridge HS, but I have no clue where the "second most competitive" came from... considering they didn't even make the (admittedly absurd) newseek rankings.

at the same time, there are a couple better schools that I can think of off the top of my hat that send more kids to top schools per capita:

Mercer Island HS
Bellevue HS
Newport HS

but regardless, Bainbridge is definitely up there in terms of the best public schools, but I don't know about this "second" business.

*off the top of my head

its based off of state wasl score testing results. admittedly bainbridge doesnt send a ton of kids to ivys (4 this past year) but it does produce numerous competitive students and i would assume a few adcoms have heard of bainbridge or know students that have applied at select universities

does anyone have other views on my chances?
