Chances for Brown ED?

Hi, I'm a current junior at a competitive magnet public school where I major in visual art. I'm pretty much dead-set on applying to Brown early but I just wanted to get some realistic feedback because my school is a little unorthodox in the way they run things (I'll get into that specifically as I go down).

I'm also looking into RISD, Pratt, SVA, MICA,Temple, VCU, WashU, and Carnegie Mellon and applying for the RISD/Brown Dual Degree Program, but Brown would be my number one, no question.

Unweighted GPA:[ul]
[li]3.861 right now (Unfortunately it's most likely going to drop by the end of junior year but I expect it to stay at least an 3.80)[/li][/ul]

School:[ul]
[]Selective/competitive public magnet school
[]Class of about 250 but we're divided into majors. Thus, from a college perspective, I'm in a "school" with 39 other people.
[/ul]

Class Rank:[ul]
[li]Doesn't rank[/li][/ul]

SAT:[ul]
[li]2230 (680M, 750W, 800CR but I plan on taking it again in May to get at least a 2300)[/li][/ul]

**SAT II/b:[ul]
[]Math IIC
[]Lit
[li]French w/ Listening[/li][/ul]

**AP Courses/b:[ul]
[]Studio Art 2-D (as a Junior)
[]Calc AB (Senior Year)
[]Psych (Senior Year)
[]possibly Art History? (Senior Year)
[/ul]

IB Courses:[ul]
[]World Lit
[]History of the Americas
[/ul]

Honors Courses:[ul]
[]French V/Lit (Senior Year)
[]Art courses
[li]Basically everything else I've taken since freshmen year or will take senior year that isn't an AP/IB because the lowest level of classes my school offers is Honors[/li][/ul]

*The school profile says this but, just to mention, my school's scheduling makes it near impossible to take as many APs/IBs as you really want. So, even though there are many more offered that I'm not involved in, it would be near impossible to fit them onto my schedule.

Hopefully this wasn't too long...please chance me honestly, even if it's a little harsh. I'd like to raise my chances of getting in, if at all possible. If anyone has advice or insider info on the Brown/RISD program, that'd be awesome too. I'm hoping my concentration on art will show through even if my stats are a little lacking.

Thank you in advance for any help :)

I would consider your EC’s as underwhelming, as well as your chances for admission to Brown as it stands now. It’s too bad, because unlike many people that I see applying to Brown, I can actually see a reason for your wishing to attend.

A few clubs and yearbook are not the typical EC’s of successful applicants. I am not sure how you round out your EC’s at this late stage, but I would think that more leadership, more diversity of interest (sports, musical instruments, something), better usage of time (activities that show a constuctive use of the majority of your HS free time and summers) would help you.

Thank you for your response
I can see what you mean by the ECs…
I don’t know if it helps any but I taught myself how to play the flute and I’m a blue belt in taekwondo but I consider those more as hobbies since I am neither in an orchestra nor a sports team. I also play volleyball but, again, not on a team, so I’m not sure it helps me too much. I was in concert choir my freshmen and sophomore year too. I saw someone on CC recommend only mentioning the important ECs when asking for chances so I left those out…

Can’t do much about my GPA but I’ll definitely try to get more involved and raise my test scores before the fall though. Not sure about leadership positions this late but I’ll try. Thank you for the insight!

I would definitely encourage you to devote more focus towards your Taekwondo (earn next belt, enter competition?) and flute (have you considered joining a rock band?) and to furthur develop these EC’s as part of your ap. These are the types of things (and not always HS clubs) that often get elite adcoms in your corner.

Actually, I recently stopped attending taekwondo because the tuition got to be too much :expressionless: As far as the flute goes, I wouldn’t consider myself all that great since I just kind of learned on my own. I’ll try to branch out into more activities along those veins though, separate from school.

Again, thank you! You’ve been a huge help; I honestly didn’t think anyone would respond to this.
